2015 TLX V6 advance (105K miles) Transmission Failure.

Over a month ago I brought the TLX to the Acura Dealer with the Xmas tree lights on. Replaced the the battery with a AGM Battery back on 11/2022. The dealer determined that the internal pressure switch was failing and that the trans needed replacement. I have a 3rd party warranty and they agreed to replace the trans and change the fluid with a used unit with only 54,000 Miles. After driving the car a few weeks after replacement the TLX is running better than ever, Acura definitely has a handle on tuning the 9-Speed correctly. The Transmission now shifts quick and smoothly in all all modes. The dealership charged the warranty co. over $3,000 which included the removal and replacement of the trans and vehicle rental, I am not sure what they pd. for the used trans. but I would estimate between $2K - $3K. My car including the trans will be covered under my current 3rd party warranty until 10/2025 or 145,000 miles.
I was also due for the timing belt service at the time Frank Leta Acura quoted me only $1,350 the timing belt service, which included the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, type 2 blue coolant and the drive belt. I was going to wait until the Sub code 4 popped up but the estimate was too good to pass up. They do not recommend changing the pulleys unless needed, they quoted me an additional $350 just for the 2 pulleys so I declined those. The dealership has since increased the cost for their timing belt service, they were the lowest in town at the time.
The warranty co. (dealer's resource) did not flinch and sent out a rep. to inspect the trans within 48 hrs., and they only needed to see the receipt for a transmission fluid change before 90,000 miles. I bought the car with 85K miles and contacted the previous owner at the time and they confirmed that they had not changed the trans fluid, so I had it changed at 87K miles by an independent shop (20 plus yrs. experience working on Honda products) for only $230.
Just wondering, has anyone else had a internal Pressure switch fail on their 9-speed trans.? I have not heard of such a failure.

Also, I believe that a transmission shop would be able to replace the internal pressure switch easily, without having to tear to much into the Trans. The pressure switch is near the circuit board from what I have seen. I would estimate that the cost would be between $2K - $3K.
At the time of the failure diagnoses, the Trans was still shifting smoothly.

No exp with the internal pump failure. But, being a former flat rate ASE tech , I would never service newer acura/honda trans at third party. There are too many alternative fluids out there, that are sold as compatible. Plus the oe service is very particular and there is a 70k powertrain warranty. I paid for trans service at Acura, just before the 4yr mark/50k at the dealer just for that reason. If something goes wrong its still under warranty. Just hit 60k recently so 10k more to go.

Now, my old 2G MDX with 167k on the otherhand. I drain and fill that myself, with OE fluid. Super simple.

I agree you should be careful, Just Honda's has been in business for over 20 yrs. working on Honda's and Acura's. The cost of Honda 3.1 trans fluid was $30 per quart for a total of $120 and labor which he said usually takes 1 hr. - 1 1/2 hrs. or so (he said the procedure is a pain). There are several Honda vehicles with the ZF 9-speed trans. which they service so they have the expertise. I would have no problem using a independent shop who services Honda / Acura vehicles everyday. Many good Honda / Acura techs go independent.
The warranty Co. also made sure that the proper fluid was used. They had no problem at all with Just Honda's servicing my Acura.

Also found this on the Web.

Ultimately, it's your choice whether you take your car to a dealership or an independent mechanic, even when your insurance company is involved. Thanks to the “right to repair” law, which was established in 2005, it's your call where you take your car for repairs.

Just make sure the shop is qualified and you will be fine, even if you worry about your Manufacturers warranty.

All consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It prohibits a manufacturer from voiding the new vehicle's warranty or a vehicle's extended warranty because service was performed by a Non-Dealer/Independent Repair shop.

I paid $230 for my Transmission fluid change in 2020 which was about $200 - $300 less than the Honda or Acura dealer was charging. The independent shop follows the exact same procedures and used the correct fluid. I had no problem with the fluid change after almost 20,000 Miles of driving. I could not justify using the Dealer with such a price difference. Some people might call that price gouging.
