Safety first!

I'm starting this thread because of the 2 recent crashes members had with their TLXs and it made me think about how the most important feature of our cars is the one we most often take for granted. We can all debate about the looks, performance, features, MPG, and every other characteristic of our cars, but we almost never talk about the safety. I'm not saying the TLX is the safest car in the world, and I'm sure many are as good, and some may be better, but there's no doubt that it is a VERY safe vehicle.

Today, we're lucky enough to have 2 members not only walk away, but in both cases, write on this forum about their experiences. More importantly, they can still be with loved ones and live their lives, but the fact that they were able to take pictures at the scene and share them with us is awesome.

I know it's been posted on here before, but I also wanted to attach a link to the crash tests and some data about the car's safety.

Vehicle details

Please stay safe everyone, these are just 2 examples of how it's the OTHER guy we mostly need to worry about.

Agreed!!!

Very well said. We are always concerned about look and mpg but never talk about safety.

Acura is definitely on the top after seeing these two accidents.

totally agree the TLX is a safe car.

However, i think most cars can sustain the same kind of damage in case of an accident.

Very true, but what's more important is what happens to the people inside. My TLX kept me safe enough so that I was able to walk away from both sides of the car getting crushed!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your quote. Do you think that most cars in this type of a crash will look as damaged or most cars in this type of a crash will protect the occupants as well?

I agree that most cars will look this way, but if you follow member codyconway's thread about the head on collision it's seemingly a much more drastic crash as it was 2 vehicles moving together and the crash was amplified. The TLX did it's job in both instances and kept the passenger compartment intact, and I'm not sure all cars would have reacted that way.

The spirit of my thread was not that the TLX is a safe car (which it is), it was how little we (myself included) really think about how safe the car is when we start the buying process. I did look at the safety ratings and was happy that my car is very high on the lists, but in all honesty, if I really liked the car and how it looked or performed, I'd have let a lesser rating sneak by to get the car I wanted.

I was only stating, IMHO, how we really don't think it will ever happen to us and so we don't put the safety of the vehicle very high on the list. For some, a safe car may be number 1, but for most of us, I'd guess it's closer to the bottom than it is to the top.
