I smacked the passenger side mirror pulling out of the garage this morning...
The damage is to the outer housing, not the actual mirror (reflective glass) but I assume the repair simply calls for swapping the entire mirror unit.
I found the mirror unit for sale online but I don't have any idea what is involved in the swap. I would love to be able to do it myself, but if it's terribly complicated I would pay to have it done.
Anyone either (a) done this repair themselves, or (b) paid to have the repair done and if so how much was it?
you'll have to loosen the interior door panel a bit, to gain access to mounting screws for Mirror.
UNLESS, there is a triangle type cover covering the mounting screws...then you dont have to loosen the interior door panel..just pry triangular cover off
I cant tell if it's ONLY covered by the triangular piece or if the entire door panel has to come off.
in my TL, the door panel has to come off.
I fixed an economy car's mirror, but all it had was plastic triangular cover which I pried off
You shouldn't have to replace the whole unit if just the outside housing is damaged. Each piece of mirror assembly can be purchased separately.
A = upper housing (aka skull cap)
B = light assembly
C = housing set
D = mirror
E = harness set
If you need to replace the other parts not noted, you'll probably need to buy the whole assembly. And since the mirrors are powered, you'll most likely need to remove the door panel too to get access to the power connector.
Coincidentally, my dad busted his passenger mirror on the Sienna the same way today too. I have to remove the door panel to get access to the power plug.
the door panel has multiple screws; one behind the handle, etc. you'll have to find them. they are EASY to spot.
after removing all screws, in order to remove panel, you have pull to separate from plastic clips from the bottom! after the clips, the door panel will be slightly wobbly and almost ready to come off. in order to take off the panel, lift up and pull towards you.
this should remove the panel from the metal door. be careful there are electrical connections, so dont pull to far away from metal door.
now, you'll be able to gain access to that little triangle cover piece. after removing triangle piece, you'll see three or four mounting bolts to the mirror.
and I DONT THINK THEY SELL mirror covers. you'll have to buy the whole mirror
Thanks Crabs! I am worried about the plastic clips breaking, but it sounds like popping them off is the correct way to access the panel, so they shouldn't break.
I took off my TLX door panels once....it was very easy and straight forward, similar to my last 07 TL-S. Theres the usual screw behind the interior handle cover, few other easy ones, and rest are clips. I did notice it's harder to disconnect the door handle cable on the inside though. I'm assuming it's because Acura realized their old style resulted in a lot of broken cable ends over time lol
Thanks guys, it's 115 degrees here in the shade/garage, so this may have to wait a few months until I can spend some time working on it in the garage...
Or, I could do it at 4 AM when it gets down to about 90 degrees.
