you wont have issues with any brand oil IMHO. Personally i prefer Syn oils due to the superior lubrication properties and ability to maintain better viscosity in cold weather, along with the 15k to 20k intervals i typically run. Im having great luck with the new Pennzoil Platinum pure plus and would recommend that or M1 Extended Performance as its the only M1 full syn they have.
Also, black oil doesnt mean its bad or bad to run your engine like that. It changing its color means its doing its job. If you want to know know how your engine is really doing get sample kits from Blackstone labs and have your oil tested. It will tell you how much life is left, how your engine is doing and is far better to go by than looking at the color.

I think almost any modern oil will do the job; however, I prefer synthetics. I follow the MID and change the filter every time.
I have never had issues with the engines on any of my cars; however, I know some Toyota's had sludging issues and needed to go with synthetic oil. If you go with extending the change interval, you need to go with a quality filter- I would use a Purolator, or Mobile1/K&N filters for extended drain intervals and not OEM.

You will be just fine with 5w20 and it wont hurt your motor. Manufacturers keep going thinner and thinner to help reduce friction everywhere they can to help meet CAFE standards.

When I traded my '06 Ridgeline on a new RDX, it (the Ridgeline) had 200,000 miles on the clock. It did not burn oil. It did not use any oil. The service computer told me to change oil about every 7,000-8,000 miles. When I changed oil, I always used Mobil 1 from the first oil change. Whoever bought my used Ridgeline, got a 200,000 mile car with a like-new engine.
I'm not going to argue with success.
