The chief designer talks about the absence of exhaust tips.
At 3:55 he talks about the rear.
Unfortunately, it appears the sexiness of the rear bumper is completely axed.
It just looks like a completely different car.

So the early TLX's won't have visible exhausts, but later models will?
The absence of a visible exhaust makes the car greener?
The absence of a visible exhaust on a non-electric vehicle is a deal breaker for me. Yes, just that one aspect is a big enough turnoff for me to not buy the TLX.

I really hope this is not it.

I guess everyone here has never seen a car go from show car to production. Anyone who's followed Acura as long as most people have been on this forum should know already... wheels, bumper caps and side skirts are the parts that get changed for production (and in this case, mirrors too).
Anyway, the exhaust discussion is here:

Sorry to disappoint you, but of course this it it. The only hope would be that Acura is learning from Lexus IS F-Sport, Caddy V-Sport and so on that they need a Type-S and it need to be more aggressive. They could take the Prototype and call it a Type-S and sell it as is and I bet they sell more than they think they would. It is sad because I would be back in a flash if they kept the Prototype styling and update the head unit to be more like Audi's MMI.

I have to say that I miss having exhaust tips on my GS 350. I thought I would grow to like th elook of those openings Lexus (and other mfgs) uses. I hope that Acura doesn't abandon them.. bnut, they probably will

Considering the disasters we have seen in the past when cars are designed by committee (i.e. Pontiac Aztek)... I think its wise to let Acura designers do whatever they want. I am not saying that the collective here doesn't have any taste... but you know there is always that one loud psychopath that sees things upside down and his/her opinion needs to be heard too.

I would think the "no exhaust tip" look for the TLX is a no-brainer at this point. Neither RLX and MDX have them and this appears to be a styling direction Acura is taking. SAD!

Exhaust tips are not a big deal to me one way or the other, but I do think it's indicative of Acura's new direction. The prototype gave me such hope but then the spy shot revealed the predictably neutered styling we know conservative powertrain choices are next. Acura have lost the ability to give their cars a soul. Naturally they want to build profitable cars like Lexus does (focus group styling), but it's come at the expense of the character that used to make them such a great car company to millions of loyal buyers.

Does anyone else think that this could possibly be the ILX that is soon to be refreshed? Look at the back of the current ILX....very similar. Also, if you check out the front of this car from other spy shots, there is a fog light circle and a line next to the fog light, just like the front of the current ILX. Just a thought.

Nope, look at the C pillar and rear quarter window, and also the tail lights seem to match the TLX rather that the ILX. But the more I do A/B switching between similar pictures of the ILX and TLX I see how familiar the body lines and rear are. Makes me more scared of the TLX production car. I find the ILX bland and un-inspiring, yet the TLX Prototype is just damn hot and sexy. Now I'm thinking while Acura may have a hit it I am afraid it is going to look like an ILX on steroids and be bland.

I do wish that this was the case for the TLX, I got this pic from half a mil Tyson on another Acura forum, Sweet backside; Maybe they will save the exposed exhaust on the SH-AWD model

The problem is that Acura won't listen.
The only thing that will catch Acura's attention and make it change, is falling sales when buyers stop buying the car.
But I don't expect to see that happening, just because of the hidden exhaust tips.
So either way, we are stuck with hidden tips for years to come.

I'm over here face palming already just thinking about what is going to happen with the rear bumper.
I see a commercial with the car flying into the air and shooting sparks at it lands and then I hear the chief designer say acura is trying to appear greener.
Does not make sense to me.
If they want to be green, they should make a TLX that averages 80mpg so 28% of the buyers in the green market would consider the TLX over the ambundantly rampant preeyus.

KeithL, I see what you are saying. I am afraid it is going to look like a bigger ILX as well. Another odd thing is that in the spyshot, the tailights are different than what is on the Prototype. In the spyshot, the white part of the tailight seems to extend along the entire bottom of the tailight, whereas in the Prototype, the white tailight only goes about halfway.

Not to be rude, but if anyone things that one piece of sheetmetal or adjoining glass will change ... well you're just nuts.

No doubt this is a styling fad for now. And no doubt the 5GTL will not be exposing the exhaust tips. It started with all these electric cars, Volt, Karma, Telsa etc. Now the other luxury brands want to follow suit to act like they are in the club. How stupid is it though? Who are they fooling to think the car isn't still burning gas, lol. The people managing these companies always make me laugh with their lame attempts of messaging. Green? lol. OK.
A few years ago it was Honda that was really leading the pack actually showing off the exhausts tips. I remember when even the base 2GTL showed off it's dual pipes I was impressed. The company at that time wanted to show that they were serious about performance as well. They even did it on the Accord, even if that wasn't the look for all the competitors (like the Camry.) Everyone else followed Honda's lead on that. The 3GTL had those unique angled cutouts that made a great impact.
Now Honda/Acura is the follower again. Sad. OK so these guys have totally sucked at design in the last 5yrs. but that doesn't mean to start following the crowd again. Honda has done this in the past, it seems almost like a cycle with them. I am not totally sold on the front of the 5GTL yet. It's just OK. But the rear of the car really looks nice. But the truth is it's not very original. It looks very similar to the Q50, Mazda 6 and the GS350. Not that it's a bad thing. But they should go back to being original and tasteful.
The exhaust tips gone is just a fad. All the brands will come around in another 5yrs or so and start bringing the exposed tailpipes back. Once people really get used to more and more boring Volts, Prius and Leafs. And instead of "green" they will call it "nostalgic".

I think the company should make Honda there more "greener" line-up and start making Acura a more sport/luxury brand

It's funny how there's nearly a total consensus on how good it could look like that. Yet we all know Acura is not gonna do it and will still make the mistake of doing it their way by emasculating it. It practically goes against common sense. I feel like going up to corporate HQ and shaking one of those guys and asking "WHYYYY?"

Not to many are really complaining about that. Most are complaining about the conservative styling (mostly the bumpers) and lack of soul that we all saw with the concept. It isnt working with the RLX. (or the ILX for that matter)

Burning Brakes
Acura is trying so hard to create their brand identity. I think they are trying too hard and making too many radical changes (some good, some bad) in a very short time which actually hurts them more.
I hope they put some real exhaust tips on the TLX in some form or another. Also hope they won't tone down the production TLX too much from the prototype. I am going to wait to see the production version but by looking at the test car above, it's plain and borning.

^lol.
It's crazy.
I'm pretty sure I heard that chief designer say the earlier models will not have exhaust tips. But I'm just going to pretend I didn't hear that and pray until I start seeing official production photos.
It is very possible that during their market research they found a large fraction of the people that are similar to the guy that walked up to me the other day on Duke's campus and said 'Hey I like your tires'. What he was really referring to are my neon yellow wheels, but he definitely used the word 'tires'.
-_-
So perhaps there are lots of people like that guy and will think that just because there aren't any indications of an exhaust showing that these types of people will think the TLX is a good car for the environment.
I think it's very possible this is what has happened and it's pathetic.

The key word in the video about the exhaust he said "some" of the early models will not have visible exhaust.
Maybe the 2.4 will have hidden exhaust and the 3.5 will have it visible?
Perhaps the 2.4 will have an orange turn signal and the 3.5 will have red turn signals?
The last spy shot of the white TLX in CA might be the 2.4 model.
