It is a coming Government requirement. I think 2016 models maybe??? My wife just ordered a new Mini. It is a 2015 model. We didn't get the back up camera since it is a pretty small car anyway but the cost was huge. I installed a backup cam on my 1G TSX. It couldn't have been easier and it does come in handy. I hope the camera in the TLX is a decent quality. Lots of complaints over in the MDX forums on the low quality image. The backup cam in the Mini looks HD. It is very sharp..... and did I mention expensive?

2018, afaik. But the gov's own stats say about >70% of cars already would have had the backup camera as standard equipment in the USA (though likely influenced a bit by initial belief the gov't was going to mandate it earlier). The mandate is just to clean up the remaining amount.

I was curious...
"The rules will phase in over several years. Automakers will be required to have compliant rearview systems in 10 percent of the vehicles they build from May 1, 2016, to May 1, 2017. That share rises to 40 percent for the next year and 100 percent starting on May 1, 2018."

Interesting, I would have figured the backup camera used in the MDX is the same as the one used in the RLX. The one in the RLX is great quality. Crisp and clear. Even at night.
