4 cyl. balance shafts?
Hi Guys.
This is not a problem but rather I need info of what I need. I've been searching the web for answer but can't really picture what it is all about.
Here's my concern. I've been a V6 driver so I am more accustomed to its inherent behavior. My TLX is 4 cyl.; when I'm on red light there's vibration coming from the engine (?). I suppose this is the nature of 4 cyl? I remember I read somewhere that 4 cyl adds a 'balance' shafts, but but we are in 2015. So did Acura put something in the 4 cyl?
I'm only about 450 miles on the odo, and with my previous Honda product the engine becomes smoother as days goes by. I hope I am correct on this but boy this vibration on idle is really annoying.
Also, I learn how to control the brake and found solution ‘back and forth motion' when braking.
Overall, I really like this car..

As far as I know all of the K24s have had a pair of balance shafts. 2.4 is a largish 4 cylinder and there will always be some vibration. From Acuranews
If you want more nitty-gritty tech details:

To improve smoothness throughout the rpm range and help lower noise levels, the engine is fitted with an internal balancer unit. Consisting of a pair of chain-driven counter-rotating shafts located in the lower block and integrated into the oil pan, the balancing system helps quell the inherent second-order harmonic vibrations that normally impact inline 4-cylinder engines.

the back and forth for me is when I'm braking to a complete stop.
hhmm. this means it's on my specific car. what manufacture date you got? I still think my 9th gen V6 accord and 14 Odyssey are much more smoother on idle and when driving.

All 4 cylinders will have vibrations, smaller engines like 1.5, 1.8 and 2.0 are less noticeable. "Big" 4-cylinders like the Acura 2.4, Mazda or Nissans 2.5 and even Porsche's monster 3.0 need balance shafts to dampen out 2nd order vibrations. How much it dampens, or rather, how much you notice it, is subjective and may vary depending on what you're comparing it to.

This is a well-known problem on larger displacement 4-cyl engines. 9th Gen Accord (4 cyl) and the current CR-V (which use essentially the same engine) have some of the same complaints. When in gear at idle and with accessory load (cooling fans, A/C, etc.) it is prone to vibrate a bit at times. Most of the cars, you will feel a light buzz in the steering wheel. Others claim they can feel it in the driver's seat.
