3G S vs 4G vs TLX
I sat down and looked at the physical differences in specifications between the 3G Type S, 4G (non AWD) and TLX. I haven't had the chance to test drive the TLX but hope to soon
When I compare the physical specifications between these three models, it seems to me that the TLX should have been the natural progression from the 3G. Instead Acura went larger and upscaled the luxury with the 4G. I think the sales volume for the 4G indicates how unsuccessful this approach was. I had a chance to drive the 4G on many occasions as a loaner during service intervals and was not impressed.
I'm sure there are many satisfied 4G owners out there. However, I think Acura may have looked at the demographics of 3G owners and thought as they aged they would want a bigger more luxury model.
Now that the kids are out of the house, I don't have to have a 4 door anymore. And I have always been impressed with my 3G Type S. Therefore I plan on keeping the 3G and buying a 2 door sports car. Unfortunately Acura doesn't make such a vehicle until the NSX comes out and then it will be out of my price range. The only possibility Acura would have of getting me into the TLX would be to offer one with a hybrid technology similar to what is offered on the RLX. And then again that may be an iffy choice for me.

In my opinion, one of the problems Acura faced with the 4G was "what to do about the RL?" The 4G was nearly the same size as the RL and priced too near it.
Agreed, the TLX would have been the better progression to the 3G but they made a statement with the 4G, for sure.

It is difficult to understand what Acura's vision is for the future. While I applaud the rebirth of the NSX, it's taking them too long to bring it to market. When I look at the other luxury car makers such as infiniti, BMW and Mercedes, they offer more selections within their model product line. For instance you can get an Infiniti Q50 gas or hybrid, Q60 coupe or convertible. BMW and Mercedes offer similar selections. If you want a 4 door sedan either FWD or AWD then maybe Acura Is something a buyer will consider. Otherwise you are SOL.
