Wheel Discussion: How much does your wheels weigh?
As I'm beginning my research on many aftermarket wheels for my car, I can't help but start to be concerned about the weight of any other wheel compared to the factory ones.
We all know that the weight of a wheel plays directly with the cars ability to accelerate quickly and shorten braking distance. However, if a wheel is heavier than stock, those two items will be degraded.
So how much does a stock wheel weigh? With and without tire is preferential. And let's just all assume that everyone starts out with the standard 18" wheel, although if anyone has weighed their Acura 17" wheels or the optional 19" designs, please post those as well.
I'm looking at TSW Willow's and Amazon.com lists the wheel weight as 33lbs for a 19x8 wheel! Is it me, or does that seem significantly heavier than what it should be?

When it comes to wheels, I would doubt day to day driving you would notice much difference between a few lbs of weight per wheel. From that article:
Regular High Rigidity Enkei GTC-01 18×10 +22: 23.76 lbs.
Specially Lightened Version Enkei GTC-01 18×10 +22: 19.8 lbs.
Regular High Rigidity GTC-01
Best Lap: 1 min. 4.646 seconds
Top Speed: 147.16 km/h @ 17.83 seconds
Specially Lightened GTC-01
Best Lap: 1 min. 5.045 seconds
Top Speed: 141.46 km/h @ 17.74 seconds
Not a lot of difference between the two.
I think the Acura TL wheels come in @ around 27 LBS (thought I read that somewhere).
I think in the grand scheme of things, get the wheels that you like the best, I doubt you're going to be tracking your car, but if you do, then maybe some lightweight 17's, but since you're probably just driving around town, get whatever you like the look of.
In the spring when I swap my Acura 18" with Wintersport M3's to the 20" RJ Legend II's with Falkens, I'll do a quick weigh in to see what the difference is.

I can tell you that the Acura 19" wheels with the HPT weigh in at 54 lbs. The 18" wheels are still on the car so I don't have a weight on them, but they do feel a bit lighter when swapping them out with the 19" wheels. (Best guess would be maybe 5-7 lbs less)
I had 18" A-Spec wheels on my '06 TL and without tires they weighed in at 32 lbs. The new '10 18" wheels are probably close to that.
I agree with Pete, that the performance increase you might see with a slightly lighter wheel isn't all that much. Unless you're making a living at the track.

Has anyone confirmed the weight of the OEM 19" wheels that come now with the advanced package.
I'm on the fence about going with the package, but if the wheels are indeed 30# each there's no way in hell I'm wasting my money when there's so many other lighter options out there within the same ballpark price wise (yes I know I'd give up blind spot and cooled seats)

unless you are tracking your car (which i assume most of us are not) then you really dont need to worry about wheel weight..
spending extra hundreds of dollars on wheels that are about 6-9 pounds lighter and also sometimes uglier is not really a smart idea to do on a acura tl..especially when the car is is about 4000 pounds including driver (if some of us are fat)
so adding about 5-9 pounds per wheel isnt going to hurt the car or reduce its performance.

I disagree, putting my snow tires on my old STI which were lighter by about 10# per wheel (18" 245s vs 17" 225s, 26# wheel vs 18#) made a night and day difference in acceleration feel.

I also disagree.
Even though the reduction in 0-60/0-100 times may be small, one can definitely feel the sluggishness in throttle response for heavier wheel/tire versus lighter wheel/tire combos.
I used to ride on the 23lbs Michelin Pilot Sport and is now using the 27lbs Bridgestone RE-01R, on the same set of aftermarket wheels. Even with only 3lbs heavier per corner, the throttle response (the time lag between stepping on the gas [and spinning up the wheel/tire] and feeling the car accelerate) is noticeably slower for the heavier set than the previous lighter set of wheels and tires.

Whether you agree or disagree with potmilks about the handling/preformance issues, one thing everyone can agree on the 4G TL looks like shit with a set of 18" RPF1's
