What changes can I expect with larger rims?

Hi all...i'm pretty sure this is my first post. i've been lurking for quite a while and reading a lot. i did multiple searches on the forum and didnt really find what i was looking for so.....

i'm currently running stock rims and tires on my '10 TL base/tech. i'd like to go to 19's but as i'm not well versed in tires and rims, i'm curious as to what any of you have experienced as far as changes in fuel economy and variances in the actual speed vs. what the speedo says as well as the accuracy of the odometer. will the computer automatically adjust like my motorcycle would when i change from stock to aftermarket pipes when it comes to fuel management?

i like the 19" 10 spoke two tone acura rims (please dont scoff at that...i'm not a young buck so i like some style that fits my taste, even if they're probably pricier than other options). to fully demonstrate my ignorance, will a rim of that size safely fit on the stock 17" tire. i feel i can get away with asking that as my previous motorcycle rim/tire combo was a 180 tire with a 210 rim, so i'm either assuming correctly or incorrectly that it can be done with a car too.

i'm undecided about lowering or not as there's a himalayan sized speed bump going into the parking lot at my job.

thanks for your patience in reading this gang. be gentle in your responses

you are going to need new 19" tires for the 19" wheels.

If you are going with the 19" Acura rim w/ reccomended tire size there will be minimal differences in speedo and such

Fuel economy, most of the time when you add a wider tire the economy goes down due to increased rolling resistance, your handling will increase due to the larger footprint - trade off

I am running the same rims on mine, but went with a 45 series tire to add more sidewall and smooth out the ride a bit, yes you lose a bit of comfort with a lower profile tire

Not worth it IMHO. The car looks better, turns more heads. BFD.
You can expect crappy MPG's, longer stopping distance, slower acceleration, more expensive tires, etc.

I love the look of a nice set of 19/20's on this car. But we are talking more than 50lbs of unsprung weight per corner. If you only care about looks, this is a quick way to improve your vehicle. If you want to really improve the handling of your car, spend good money on a set of lightweight 18's with the Michelin Pilot Sport.

Larger rims + lower-profile higher-performance tires = rougher ride.

I was also considering the same thing with my 09 TL Base/Tech, but wasn't sure if it would rub with 245/45/19. Any suggestions?

Why 245/45/19, and not 245/40/19 as for OEM specs ?

The general rule is that the higher the performance and/or the higher the max speed rating of a tire, the stiffer it is the sidewall, and the rougher the ride.

General purpose touring tires have the softest sidewall, and will give the easiest ride. But they are no good for any spirited driving, and will squeal like crazy if pushed.

I'm currently running the best all season 245/40/19 that money can buy. What a letdown. This car begs to be driven hard in the corner. Tons of under-steer keeps me from really enjoying this canyon carver. Never had that issue with Pilot Sports PS2's that came with the HPT package.

But the PS A/S are a necessary compromise for our wickedly wet winters here in Oregon.

Yes, it is definitely night and day when comparing the two, especially that the PS2 is amongst the stickiest summer compound maximum-performance tires.

I suggest starting a new thread on the Z1 when you have a more detailed update, just like I did with my Pilot Super Sport.

This will make it easier for others to find your thread, and learn more about the Z1.

Personally I think the TL is a luxury cruizer and not much of a "canyon carver" so I prefer a better ride to the hard rough ride of a sport tire.

Also, with a sport (sticky, soft) tire compound you will wear tires quite quickly, so weigh the sport in your driving and decide if you want to put new tires on each year or let them wear for a few years.

I mean really, how much "sport" driving is done in a normal car? Even my MINI's were more daily drivers than "rockets" my S had just aobut a full race set up with tires, wheels, BBK, exhaust, header, coilovers and on and on... drove it mostly to work and that's about all. Track day was the only time she got to strech her legs and run like she wanted.

So, do not flame, but MOST are not buying a TL due to the sporting nature of this 4000lb vehicle, it's a great car but not a racer.

The 4G TL is more of a sport sedan than a luxury cruiser. The ES350 is the best example of a luxury cruiser.

In fact, the 4G TL is more than just a regular sport sedan. The sporty suspension tuning and the advanced torque-vectoring feature on the SH-AWD TL allow the car to take corners at a even higher speed than some so-called sport cars or sport racers.

However, the only limiting factor is the crappy OEM all-season tires, which seriously compromise the high handling potential of the advanced sport sedan.

Tire is the most crucial factor in determining the handling ability of a car. No matter how good it is the suspension tuning and how advance it is the AWD system, it all comes down only to the 4 patches of tire rubber that come in contact with the roads.

The pre-2012 TL's were available with a sticky 19" PS2 high perf. tire (HPT) option to fully unleash the handling potential of the SH-AWD TL. It's really a pity that for 2012, no HPT option is available and the OEM 19" tires become the very crappy RS-A all-season tires.

For those, who have bought the 4G TL, looking for a luxury cruiser ride, they have bought the wrong car. Instead the ES350 is the best choice.

I upgraded the OEM 245/45/18 Michelins on my 2012 SH-AWD 6MT to 245/35ZR20 Toyo Proxes4. Used 20x9.5 wheels by Vossen. I cannot really say I have noticed a big drastic change in the driving and handling. It seems a little harder ride but I do not notice the handling being and better or worse. The car is not lowered. I am doing most of my driving on Texas roads and mostly highway driving.
