TL seems very hard on tires

I have a TL 2009 with 41K miles approx. About 10K miles ago I had the tires checked as I knew I needed 1 tire. I was told I needed 4 tires as confirmed by two different tire places. I was lucky that Michelin covered 50% of the cost which was huge. It was something like 1700.00 with mounting, taxes, balancing and a rear alighment that Michelin wanted cost ($99.00) Most people these days would have a heart attack on a 1700 tire bill. Anyway my car is due for lease end. The tires were checked and in 10K miles of South Fla driving they are about 1/3 worn (new tires are 9/32) They are at 6/32. That does not sound great to me. The dealer when I asked stated they never heard any issues with tires going so quickly etc. Appreciate experiences from other TL owners. In my many years of leasing I rarely have to change tires, certainly not all 4.

what kind of wear did the tires display?
the 3rd gen TL has a very finicky suspension.
I'm assuming the same is for the 4G.

and in all honesty, id can probably get the same set of tires for probably about 800 bucks..

are you sure you didnt get ripped off? 1700 for stock tires seems wayyyyyyy too steep.

do you know how to check your own tire?

There was pretty even wear on the entire tire. I did not get 41K from
the stock tires. I got less than 30K miles (I have to check exactly. Now they are 1/3rd done after about 10K miles approx. I could not get anything much less on the Michelin tire. A cheaper tire was like $200 ea from sams club but mounting etc. The Michelin is a very pricey tire at 280 each plus tax balancing mounting etc. Since Mich covered 50% of the tire costs I made zero sense not to replace them with Michelins. Believe me those tires were shot. Always inflated properly and for a while I was using nitrogen. I was told they wear longer with nitrogen but that ddid nothing for me.

since you said "even wear"
we can rule out camber and toe.

it might be that specific tire.

if you're pissed at 41k miles on a tire, you would hate my summer tires!

Like the others have said, your pretty lucky to get 41k, or even 30k miles on those tires. That's in canadian terms that i understand anywhere between 48,000km - 65,000km. From my experience, stock tires will give you 50-60k (km) before they need replacing. Summer tires are even worse. So your pretty lucky tht Michelin covered 50% of the cost. But $1700 for a set of 4????? No wonder they covered 50% of the cost. They ripped you off. And that's U.S. pricing??? Here in canada, i got a set of summer performance tires, Bridgestone Potenza RE760, 245/40/19 which are a heck of alot better than the Stock tires, for $1100 taxes in out the door. Even the stock tire wouldn't be anymore than $300 a peice here, and even that's pushing it.

I dont think I made things clear. At less than 30K all 4 tires needed to be replaced. They were replaced. Now with only about 10K miles driven they are 1/3rd worn according to the lease inspector. That tells me the cars wears these tires pretty hard?

That $1700 was likely the list price, and not the actual selling price which buyers are paying for.

Tires and almost everything else are cheaper in the US than in Canada, due to the 10x more population thus volume price breaks.

40k on tires isn't bad

How often do you rotate? I rotate every 5k (50% between oil changes) and most of my tires last pretty well.

This also has to do with; what type of driving do you do (highway or twisties), inflation, temp and so on....

And BTW, $1700 for tires??? WTF? tirerack.com

The Pilot HX MXM4s that came on my Type-SH lasted about 35k. I religiously maintained them and they wore evenly. Your driving habits may affect the wear to some degree. All things being equal the tire's life will be determined by the type of tire and compound. This has nothing to do with the car.

What kind of tires are you putting on the car? (Brand, Model, size)

Next time you need tires consult me. Any tire place I go to and buy tires from better include the mounting/balancing for free and one place even gives me a free road force alignment. The place I frequent most also beats or AT LEAST matches tirerack.

perhaps its the heat and the way you drive. south FL and TX=HOT. heat tends to wear tires a little quicker. also if you tend to haul stuff and people frequently that can also contribute to increased tire wear (it does in the 3G).

i know my DWS tires are rated for 50kmi on my 3G TL...i know i'll NEVER get that b/c of how i drive (i enjoy cornering too much ).

even if the toe is out a little bit the car can eat tires. i know that is an issue with the 3G TL as justn pointed out.

i'm leaning towards the FL heat that has caused your tire wear.

I live in New England and my continental DWS' worked great until a pot hole took one out. I got about 20k out of it and most of the tire is in 6/32 shape. I say most because I noticed the far interior side is worn, right on the edge. I was told an alignment is the issue and that it needs to be done every 10k miles. Considering the same place did the alignment at time of purchase, I think the sales rep is full of it but that's just my opinion.

To answer your question, even if the dealer knew there was a problem, most would not or could not tell you as it creates "friction" for them in terms of sales and service. If a tire is wearing down evenly much faster than it should, there's a problem with the compound of the rubber. If the tire manufacturer is willing to pony up half the bill, I wouldn't think twice about it as in the end your safety is much more important than a few hunderd bucks.
