SH-AWD w/HPT and snow

Hey all, I couldnt find a thread regarding this topic so I figured I would ask. How would the SH-AWD handle with the HPTs in snow? Would the AWD help at all or does that not even matter when you have a high performance summer tire driving in snow. I love the look of the 18's, however I also like the 19's a lot. Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks

It will be a disaster!

Best bet is to get a second set of 4 wheels (downsizing to either 17- or 18-inch) with snow tires mounted on them and then swap out the 19-inch HPTs/wheels at wintertime for the winter tires/wheels.

Wavehogger, PetesTL, and I have done this and it is the best way to go.

I would highly recommend Dunlop Winter Sport 3D tires.

HPTs in the snow will be terrible, much worse than a FWD car with all-seasons.

The rubber compound in the high performance summer tires will harden to become unusable in low temp condition (below 3 degreeC), let alone driving them in the snow. Those tires will have ZERO traction in the snow.

Tires make all the difference. You could put a set of snow tires on a corvette and it would outhandle most SUV's w/all-seasons in the snow.

Try the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 which is a V-speed rated high performance snow tire. It is not the best snow tire in the snow, but it is the best snow tire in the dry.

On dry roads, it can perform just like a high performance summer tire; whereas all other snow tires can only perform like a all-season summer tire at best.

Before I switch to the PA3, I used to wishing that I had changed back to summer tires whenever I drove on dry roads in the winter time. But not any more after driven the PA3 snow tires in the dry.

How are the Dunlop winter tires mentioned above in the snow? I'm finding that my g/f's car with the Nokian WR tires (snow symbol) aren't really that great in the snow.

Also, do those Dunlop's perform well in the deep snow, or only in light snow?

Thanks!

The Dunlop Winter Sport D3 tires are Winter Passenger Performance Tires.

By definition -- and design -- they give up some deep snow capability to perform better in the wet and dry.

They handle light snow well.
