Pilot MXM4 tires in rain

My 2012 TL SH-AWD tech has always felt stable, planted when getting on and off ramps even when the roads were wet. That is till yday! I was getting on to the highway, it was raining, and was taking the ramp like usual (which is probably a little faster than recommended but I have always done that At the end of the curve when I was staring to straighten out the car suddenly lost traction and I had to frantically adjust the steering back and forth to counter the skid. I managed to do it but it was scary! And till it happened there was no indication that that was going to happen. The tires have 22K miles and I guess the MXM4 tires aren't the greatest tires for wet traction, but this came as a big surprise as this was the first time and I have driven under similar conditions many times. Probably the tires are staring to wear out and it is time to slow down

i have had these tires on my last 4 honda/acura products....they absolutley suck balls in the wet weather.....

i would qualify that with this, they are marginal at best when new, the second half of their life they are noisy, rough riding, hydroplaning tires....

I changed my tires to continintal DWS all season and when I hit the wet road puddles, its like the sun is still out. Amazing tire. Those OEM tires suck.

I don't know if you have gotten consistent rain lately, but part of the problem may be if it had not rained in a while, the roads are extra slick due to oil being washed away.

The tires suck- I replaced mine at 25K because they were crappy in the rain and also on dry roads too. I could spin those tires without trying. There are lots of better choices. I just don't understand how they can command such a premium? The DWS's or Nitto Motivos are superior tires: cost less, perform better, and last longer.

I used to have a Mazda6 and on that car I had tried the DWS's - they were good, smooth and comfortable but I felt that they completely numbed out the steering feel. I swapped them out within 30 days for the Yokohama Envigors and they were great especially in terms of steering feel and equally comfortable. But I only had them for a few months before I sold the car so not sure how well they wear out etc.

How many miles have you had on them so far?

The steering actually felt better to me then what I felt with the stock tires. Then again after driving my Miata, I like the lazy feel my 4g feels. That is in comparison to the track feel of my Miata.

10mdxer, was it the front or the rear of the car that started to break loose ? Or was it a simultaneously 4-wheel drift ?

I'm going to guess about 30,000. I don't keep great records on all this because I have 5 to 7 cars that are under my care. I will tell you the other night we had one of those super down pours and the road became half flooded so I had to jerk the wheel hard to to keep the cars straight and off the concrete wall, they did the job. I was thinking wow that could have been bad and then saw a 5 series on the side of the road that had a different experience. No doubt new tires will be better than old nevertheless. I only have limited time on the 12 so right now it been it very good when driving through storms. I would consider going 255 width on the 12 but when time for tires are needed on the 12 Envigors will be replaced by something else.

I kind of agree with this experience. More luxury touring, also why I bump it up a centimeter. To still keep rubber on the road, give some curb protection and nice look but mellow it out a bit.

As far as I can remember the front started to break loose first, but I can't say for sure.

This should be the correct behavior. The front heavy FWD-chassis 4G TL is factory calibrated to exhibit mild understeer behavior, which is deemed safer than oversteer for the general driving skill of the TL owners.

But the VSA should have activated when the front started to slip, so as to stablize the car right away.
