Damage to Vossen CV3

Hi everyone -

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Just had a heatbreaking moment when driving around my lunch hour - took one glance down at my phone, and accidentally hit a pothole on the passenger side going about 60 km/h. This pothole was easily the biggest bump I've ever hit, and left a pretty nasty scar on my 4 day old CV3s.

Thought I'd post this in hopes of someone confirming whether this is even close to repairable, or if I should just order a new rim today. Also, I unfortunately see a fair bit of Vossen shaming on these forums, so figured you guys might get a kick out of seeing a damaged one.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Way to be a good sport. Looks like you hit the mother load, though I still think that's repairable.

i would just replace it.. you cant really bend cast wheels.

on the important side.. why are you running a 225 on a 20x9.. could have went with a wider tire dont you think?

Wait, you mean you hit a pothole while riding on cast wheels and it didn't shatter into a thousand pieces???

On another note, good luck getting it taken care of...don't see why it couldn't be repaired but I'm no pro.

Assuming it can't be repaired/isn't safe to do so, I will just replace it. Maybe I can make a cool clock or wine rack out of this.

In the meantime, is it safe to drive on? I haven't noticed any loss in tire pressure on the wheel, and don't feel any major vibrations when driving. It doesn't feel normal, but that's probably an alignment problem given how big of a bump it was...

Thanks again!

Dang, that looks bad! They held up pretty well. How deep was the pothole? One foot?

pretty sure 1 foot potholes would do more damage.. thats more than half your rim inside a hole depending on how wide it is.. if its not wide enough then the dept of the hole is not a factor

Wow that sucks. I bet that pot hole was pretty jarring. Good to see it bent though vs. the alternative.

Car is at the tire shop today - will be getting my stocks put back on and arranging for a replacement.

Once I get it back I will go take a photo of that pothole and post it here. Also going to e-mail the City to tell them it needs to be repaired ASAP as it is on a high-traffic road.

Thanks again everyone for the feedback.

Thought I'd resurrect my whole thread after what happened today!

Was driving along one of the main roads in KW (Weber St for you local kids), and a softball sized chunk of concrete fell into my lane. Rather than let it rip my bumper and exhaust kit apart (which are about 1.5" off the ground), I swerved and ran over it with my front passenger wheel. Almost ended up smashing the lip on this side again:

https://i.imgur.com/LL2DsZe.jpg

If you read my thread above you'd notice this was a replacement rim for one that had been smashed by a pothole a few months ago.

I gotta say I'm extremely impressed that my tires withstood the impact, especially considering it hit the stretched sidewall. No air leak, no alignment trouble, and after some tireshine it looks the same as always.

Can't recommend these tires enough after this - Toyo Proxes 4 Plus

Stay safe out there guys!

Glad you are safe. Btw, why are you running such narrow tires on a 9" rim?

225 on a 9" wheel isn't too bad. I ran that size on my TSX and never had any issues. Seen a lot skinnier. The 35 series helped.

Thanks man!

stretched tires allowed me to lower my car that much more...stretched tires = lower profile inside the wheel well. Also exposes the lip of the rim for aesthetics/little heart attacks like this haha.

@justn - I will keep an eye on this for bubbling - thanks for the tip. I've spoken with Toyo who recommended I unmount it from the rim and check the inside for tears in the inner-layer (which is why bubbles appear)...hopefully will get to that this week

Toyo tires FTW!!! Btw the proxes 4+ have a pretty stiff sidewall which helped n not to mention the stretched tire contributed to it.

Do the Vossens have via or jwl stamped on. Them?
And just to double check these are Vossens not vossen reps right??

Sometimes behind the spokes sometimes on the outer lip between spokes.

I did some more research however and found someone claiming the original vossens (or maybe varrstoen, I honestly confused the two) had made in japan stamped which clearly is false. So I guess some places will even put stamps on just for looks.

sure thing, i will check in the next day or two and get back to you. I'm getting road-force balancing done on Tuesday so I'll likely snap a pic while the wheel is off.

thanks for the reference photos

So I would really like an update on this. Did the Vossen wheels have any certification markings?

jwl and via, those stamps are even given out to ROTA's...

so im not suprised that they will have those stamps..

the true test is TUV which vossen cast wheels will never get.. its just a simple fact.. personally if it does not have TUV certification, i wouldnt put them on my car..

1) WHAT IS TUV? - In the case of wheels, TUV is a European auditing and certification body that ensures wheels manufactured for sale in Germany, Switzerland and Austria meet international (ECE Regulations), EC (European Community) directives, and German Motor Traffic Agency (KBA) road traffic legislation.
HRE Explains: What is TUV? | HRE Performance Wheels

My Work Wheels arent TUV approved... but that is because they already pass all the certifications needed for the USDM/JDM markets.

TUV is simply the European certification so most wheels made in Japan or the US will not be TUV approved. Companies like Volk, Works, Weds are all great quality and will not see TUV testing as they are not German or Austrian companies.

For the record, Rota makes fake wheels with fake JWL VIA markings. Rota wheels also used to have MADE IN JAPAN markings but they took those off when they started getting heat for it. No where on Rotas actual site do they claim to be VIA or JWL certified.

I have a G35 owner telling me Vossen wheel are JWL VIA certified and that his brand new Vossens have the markings. I have also been told by a Vossen rep that they are looking to get the TUV certifications... which makes me they arent certified by anyone because they dont need TUV if they have JWL.

I wouldnt say you wont see them at all.. some of volks wheels are TUV certified.. wheels that are made for european cars such as porsche will have certification on it.. very limited but they do have it.. work and weds wheels are the same.. some wheels have all 3 certification JWL VIA and TUV.

I have the same Vossen's and had about the same damage. They are repairable, but after, I can almost guarantee you that they will be way off when you get the wheel balanced. I had mine powder coated and repaired but have a slight shimmy feeling that will never go away (I am very picky and every little thing bothers me!) ... I recommend buying a new one because you cant go wrong. Get the busted up one repaired and save for a spare.

Honestly dude, I'm not super inclined to look into this for you anymore. You go into all the small groups on this forum, tell everyone you own Works (yep, we know you do), and then tell everyone that their wheels suck. I'm sure everything you say is correct and valid, and I'm sure in your mind you are doing the community a service, but in my mind you are spreading your elitist bullshit that most of us don't want to hear. Leave my fucking wheels alone. They may not be the best ones on here, but I spent a lot of my money on these and I'm proud of them. I've seen at least a dozen different spots on AZ where you have started big arguments over this, and it's a big reason why I don't post here anymore. Go jerk off on your wheels and leave us out of it.

Hell, I'll even help you get hard first. If I could go back to when I bought my wheels, I wish I knew more. I wish I did more research on safety standards. I wish I had a better understanding of where Vossen stood in the market. But I didn't. You know what my build thread is called? ROOKIE MODDER. That's why I was, to learn. Not help you make everyone else like me feel like shit and out 4 grand for something you know more about. Congratulations buddy - you could have done something helpful, and instead made it about yourself.

Hey bud, I was wondering why you stopped posting, thought you changed cars.

Don't let negativity stop you, at the end of the day it is about you and your car. Mod it to your taste, after all it is your wallet.

This is why more people like you should stick around. Ive learned a lot from your posts since I joined here. There are a a few punks who know it all and like to criticize but won't help another member out because "people should get this info on their own" even though this site is mainly the place to get that info in the first place!

Your car is one of my very favorites along with Ufc_bronco and CarbonTsex who just like you seem to have no problem helping others out. There is a difference between constructive criticism and just down right hate. Haters will always be there but the other 95% of the people who see your car absolutely love it.

Whoa dude. Calm down. My apologies that my posts to others have pissed you off. I dont hold grudges or carry over topics from other pages. So my intentions here have nothing to do with what I say to anyone else.

I asked a question in hopes for an answer. Simple as that.

Chan Mike was awesome enough to take a moment of his time and find that answer and at the same time proved these wheels meet the same safety standards as mine do. You could have been the one to prove me wrong but instead you wanted to talk shit. Whatever man. This place is a bunch of hypocrites.
