Transmission clunk when setting off 1st time

Driving an SH-AWD 2011 model. Whenever I start from parked I always get a clunk from the transmission.

i.e. first thing in the morning, start the car, put into D, as soon as I move off I hear the clunk within a foot of travel. This happens in forward and reverse. I never hear it after that first time, i.e. when in stop start traffic shifting from N to D or S at any other time.

Is that normal - do others out there have this too?

I have noticied this on a couple of garage loaners too.

If it is common, does anybody know what causes it?

Thanks.

u sure it's transmission?
i know i get a clunk in the back. it's the rear diff. i believe that's normal.
It's switching rotations so the assembly shifts a bit as a result of the reversal of the torque. A gentle clunk should be normal.

I know Honda's also do a brake/abs "test" when u take off and the car's cold. It happens on the exacts spot on my street every morning for all my newer Hondas. That sounds like a small clunk too (but quieter than rear diff clunk)

Transmission in general - could be the rear diff i guess. Maybe somebody has a more exact explanation, but it certainly sounds like it is not just me hearing or experiencing it.

Thanks.

But a slight thud while shifting from D to R is normal for auto's (should be for MT as well). It's just the drive train shifting weight on the mounts. If u've ever seen an engine rev, it'll rock back n forth a bit because the mounts arent solid (noise and comfort/vibration purposes).

I think its a just a normal trait of the Honda tranny in general. My 08 TL did it, our 09 Ody does it and my 10 TL does it. It is definitely coming from the front end and not the differential. Other than annoying at times I wouldn't worry about it.

Ya it's normal and I hate it. Sounds like somethings screwed up with the car. Till this day it still bugs me.

x2

Every morning when I back out of the garage it clunks into gear and reminds me of my 70 Chevelle transmission which is not a sensation I want in my 2012 Acura (my 06 was the same though).
