Slight "groan" in rear end
Slight "groan" in rear end
Hey everyone!
I've searched and have come up short on finding anything, so my appologies for starting this thread if it has been covered.
My '09 Tech FWD (50,000 miles) has developed a low/deep sounding groan in the rear end. It presents itself at 30 MPH, and gets slightly louder all the way through 80 MPH. To me, it sounds like a wheel bearing has gone out, or is starting to go out (I've had wheel bearings fail in past and know what they sound like), however, 2 Acura dealers and my local shop have ruled out the wheel bearings. The local shop even got out the stethoscope, but nothing could be found (although they CAN hear it).
They've checked everything from tires to a sticky caliper. Tires are brand new, car is in line, brakes are good.
I've read threads about a prop shaft, which describes the sound I have, but I don't have the SH-AWD, so it can't be that.
Any thoughts, suggestions or similar issues?
Thanks for all your help!

Although wheel bearings on Hondas, especially at that mileage, dont typically go bad, that still makes the most sense. If the noise was there before you replaced the tires, then yes....rule the tire thing out. But wheel bearings can be odd in their behavior, and you cant really always check their condition with just the car in the air and spinning the wheels, even with a stethoscope. They usually have to be loaded with the weight of the vehicle on them to get them to make the certain noises that they can make.
Sorry to revive a thread that's old, but I'm a new owner of an 09 TL Tech (not SH-AWD) and have the same type of noise you've experienced. Mine is evident between 35mph-45mph and then goes away completely. It's definitely from the rear of the car and sounds like a lower pitched dull roar or groan, as you describe.
I thought it was my old tires, but I replaced them today.
Were you able to pinpoint the issue on your TL? Thanks!

I have a 2012 AWD and have noticed this with in the last week on the highway. I already had the prop. shaft fixed for the noise it was making. You are correct that it's like a dull roar, mines a little higher, between 40 and 50mph. Plan on jacking it up this weekend and checking the wheel bearings. Let me know if you end up taking it in and find anything out.

But, they replaced it today under the power train warranty and the the problem is completely gone! Hope that helps you diagnose your problem as well.
