Shifting from Park to Drive

What could be causing my car to jerk when putting it into drive? Feels like a bad engine mount or a trans problem but I took it to Acura and the said none are bad......it's a 13' sh-awd tech, does it like 3-4 times i shift into gear when in/out of car, also I hear like "crack" noise when it happens.

I've noticed this too with my 12 SH-AWD. Only if my foot is NOT on the brake when shifting from P to D, or D to R, etc. Anytime my foot is on the brake it doesn't make the noise. No other problems it seems other than the noise it makes.

Why would you shift to D and not hold Brake? Seems kinda dangerous....IMHO.

If you car is under warranty, I would get it checked out, especially when it's repeatable issue.

That is like saying driving a manual transmission car is dangerous... not seeing the logic on that one.

You should NOT be able to shift from P to D (or to any other gear position) without pressing your brake. There is a electrical lock device (called an interlock) that prevents this. All new cars sold in the US for many years have this interlock device.

Not that this helps you, but I had a '95 Legend that did the exact same thing. It would lunge forward slightly and I'd her a click sound. The dealer said maybe it was the engine mount but was never able to determine the cause and I lived with it.

Lmao.

Have you guys never tapped the brake to get it in neutral, roll out of the driveway and pop it in drive once you're out?? I don't know why everyone thinks this is madness. Not everything has to be so mechanical....Foot on brake until drive, check both ways before moving, hands at 10-2.

No one has addressed the OP's question, which has nothing to do with pressing the brake to shift between part and drive:

No, because I'm not 15 years old trying to sneak out of my parent's house at night.

I've noticed this when I park in my driveway (slightly steep incline) and don't put my parking brakes on. I believe the car rests the weight on the gears (gears are engaged in park, the weight is on the gears). Normally (99.99%) of the time I engage my parking brake so the weight is applied to the wheels/brake and not the trans. I always slow to 0, depress the brakes all the way, engage parking brake, shift to park, and release normal brakes.

I think that the noise and jerkiness is from the transmission shifting into drive with the weight of the car against it.

It could be a bad CV joint or axle that allows for play during the engagement of the transmission. Even though the wheel is held still by your brakes, the axle moves slightly with the building pressure of the trans and causes the noise. Also when was the trans fluid changed last, improper fluid flow could cause the issue?
