Poor gas mileage
Poor gas mileage
anyone notice poor gas mileage on 2010 tl shawd. i've never gotten better than 22 mpg on the highway. the manufacturer claims i should get 25 mpg. the car runs well and no obvious problems. i've got 4000 miles on it, so it should be broken in.
the manufacturer claims 17 city 25 highway 20 average...i usually get 21 or soo average at time of fillup...i would like to also see better fuel economy, and i dont think i would get 25 mph on highway either...
24.7 overall since car was picked up; now has 7K miles on it.
I drive half highway/half urban-suburban (trip computer shows average speed of about 33-35 generally). The mileage has taken a small dip since it turned cold. I don't baby the car, but I'm not hard on the throttle all the time either.
In my experience, Hondas/Acuras really don't return optimal mileage until they get about 10-20,000 miles on them, so I'm hoping for some small additional improvement over the next year.
I'm pretty pleased with this mileage. I expect that in a stint of all-highway driving, I could probably hit 28 mpg, if not a little more.
Your experience of no better than 22 mpg on the highway suggests a problem in alignment, tire pressure, or something else. That's really an outlier.

like i mentioned in another forum...i went from LAX area to Vegas and back was getting an average of 27.1 MPG on the highway...and when I go to San Diego for military training, i usually get 25-26 MPG...so...yea

Mine had worked it's way up to 27+ mpg, but as soon as they started selling the winter gas, it dropped. Just went to AC and put $20 in before I left so not to have to let NJ attendants fill the tank, and was getting hi 26's again (and this with winter tires), so I might just have to change stations to see if is it something odd with the gas at the station I normally use. I'll be headed to Texas this weekend, so I'll be interested to see what I get on a long, sustained trip.

Thanks for the feedback. My tires are inflated correctly. The weather here just turned cold, so the weather is not too big a factor. The only two possibilities would be that the k&n air filter i installed is creating a problem or the computer in the vehicle is not calculating the mpg correctly. I will do a calculation not relying on the readout from the car. Thanks again.
Don't know about others, but I'm finding the vehicle computer is normally within .3 to .5 mpg when I compare what it shows when I fuel and after I do the math properly. The computer is always on the low side by this fraction of a gallon, so after 14 months and nearly 38,000 miles, I consider it a reliable measurement.
^ Just bested our 26MPG with a 27 mpg HWY. 92 octane. There are so many factors that affect gas milage.
Fuel-Are you using the proper type?, is it a blend?
Driver style-Jackrabbit starts, no cruise control, Italian?
Road conditions-Rough pavement, hilly areas, lots of turns.
Weather-Wind, rain, snow, or just plain heat with the AC cranking.
Tires-Are they properly inflated?, are they wide & high performance?

Mine is even worse: 13 city on short runs and 19 to 20 on suburban runs of approx. 50 miles. The car is a stick shift, driven somewhat enthusiastically but not extremely so, and the mileage has been consistent throughout our first year and 7kmiles of ownership. I have often wondered if the problem might be in the computer, as the car drives and performs impeccably and has no mods. One of these days I will verify by computing it manually. However, even if it turns out to be accurate, I'm not inclined to complain too much, as the performance of this car, engine especially, is exhilarating, and, given our relatively modest annual mileage, the cost is acceptable.
Agree, the gas mileage is horrible! I had an 08 TL-S and was averaging around 26 on the same commute that I am now getting 20! My tires are inflated properly, I only use 91 or 93 if I can find it and always use cruise control. My commute is about 10 miles freeway and 2 miles street traffic, the bad gas mileage is really starting to piss me off! This is my 4th Honda/Acura and the 1st one that hasn't come close to hitting the gas mileage given on the sticker...

I get about 22.5 mpg and my car has 10k miles on it now. Though I'd say my drive is like 90% highway, you'd be surprised how much that 10% will lower your average. And as everyone said, your driving style affects your average significantly.
On a 250-mile road trip, Houston to Dallas I can average 31 mpg with our 2008 TL without the cruise control on. With the cruise on it drops to 26. This is repeatable. I attribute it to not trying to maintain speed on the inclines, which the cruise would otherwise do. Around town with the wife driving she averages between 19 and 22. All of this is with using the trip computer to get the numbers so calibrated actuals may vary. I also believe the advertised numbers are calculated at 55 mph highway, which can make a big difference. I also notice on road trips that I get consistently better gas mileage with 93 octane premium (Chevron & Shell) versus trying to cheat with the middle grade stuff. The car runs fine on either, but seems to do slightly better (1~2 mpg) with premium.

I was able to get 30mpg once under perfect highway conditions
but most of my driving is city - where the average is a poor 18
what this car needs is a stop engine function for the traffic lights
now we need any 2012 owners to post their mileage w/ the 6 spd auto
what about the 6spd manual?

The automaker said Monday an “auto start-stop” system, which cuts off the engine when a vehicle comes to a complete stop, will be available on Ford’s conventional cars and SUVs beginning in 2012.

2011 AWD auto.....23.5 highway (75 miles/hr) and 18 suburban. I average 22 with 70% highway and 30 suburban...not bad for a 2 ton car, 305 HP and AWD...my 206 TL would get between 24-24.5 mpg under the same conditions.
