OEM or Acura windshield?
OEM or Acura windshield?
Just got a nasty crack in the windshield (2012 TL) and I was quoted around $300 for OEM or $700 for Acura glass. What will I be missing if I go with OEM? With all the light sensors up front I'm worried that OEM will mess with the sensitivity but then again $300 doesn't sound that bad.
Is the windshield the same as the 2009? Will I get a lower quote if I lie on the year?

ACOUSTIC WINDSHIELD
Special acoustic glass is used on the TL windshield to help reduce wind noise. Tuned specifically to attenuate wind-noise frequencies, the windshield uses two layers of 2 mm safety glass with an in-between layer of a transparent elastic acoustic membrane for a total thickness of 4.5 mm. The windshield (like the side windows and 5 mm thick rear window) is UV light absorbing. The acoustic windshield (in conjunction thick side windows) helps position the TL at the top of its class in wind-noise performance.

Mac, the acoustic glass has been present on the 4G since day one.

is the OEM glass the EXACT same specs as the acura badged glass (ie manufactured by the same company with the same codes on the label?
if you look at the windshield on the car right now there is a manufacturer's name with a bunch of codes. you can get the same windshield without the "acura" badge on it for significantly less.
it was established in the 3G forums that AP tech makes the windshield for the 3G TL. confirmation of the codes on "label" were the same as the original "acura" glass. i know a different company makes the windshield for the MDX (agc automotive).
so if you can get the exact same windshield less the "acura" badge...then you'll know its the same.

For 2012, the use of noise insulating foam has been expanded to include the roof separators. In addition, a new body sealing compound and improved weatherstripping design help reduce high frequency noise by 3 dB within the TL's interior.

misu,
check if your insurance covers cracks.
I had 2 bad chips and I told them, after they tried to fix the chips, that I want an OEM and they paid for it, since the car was so new.
Anyways,
I'd go with the cheaper one if insurance don't cover it, since you'll might end up having another crack and then you'll be pissed.

The only negative experience with glass replacement a friend of mine had on his TL was the OEM glass didn't come with the 4" of tint across the top. He actually went back and had them swap out for the Acura glass.
