The Infamous Sound

Greetings AZ
I am a new owner of a 2010 TL SH-AWD and unfortunately being that this is my first post I came across a problem. I'm pretty sure you guys are familiar with the famous knocking sound coming from the engine. And I was told it might a lifter (3 mechanics told me). Is there any way to get this resolved? It happens when idle but not so noticeable but when I hit 3k RPM you can hear it louder especially going pass 3k. Dealer wants $700 and thats not to resolve the problem but to start so it's not guarantee it would stop the sound. I have 54k miles btw. Thanks!

Just make sure you are not confusing a "lifter" sound with a rusted heat shield sound. My money is on the rusted heat shield around the drive shaft areas. Check that first.

I have heard no such sound on my 2010 AWD (knock wood) after 5 years. Good luck getting it resolved. Let us know the problem/fix.

Interesting. I'm assuming the sound is the same correct? Noob here 1st Acrua. Is that something I can check on my own? If so how can I go about checking it out? Thank you.

Sounds in the engine bay bounces around and sometimes, or actually all times, you don't know where it comes from unless you get a stethoscope and listen closely. Get one and listen if the sound actually comes under the valve covers. If you can separate a sound that comes from external to the engine components, such as a heat shield, or internal like a valve, then that would be nice.

How about shoot a video and post it for the rest of us to hear the actual sound, at idle. A 20-30 second video would do it.

I had a mechanic do so with the stethoscope and thats when he told me it was a lifter but than yet again I wouldn't know for certain.

I was able to take a video but note that the volume is extremely low I have no idea why. I think headphones would be able to pick up the sound if not I'll redo the video tonight. Thank you.

The sound is not noticeable during idle but once I hit the acceleration around 3k RPM and higher the sound increases.

OK, I listened to that. It sounds like cylinder misfires to me.

Before you start taking the engine apart to replace lifters... just out of curiosity inspect the spark plugs for bent tips and re-torque them to spec. If you go to an Acura dealership, they have access to the Honda Diagnostic System computer. This can reveal a few things the "engine light" doesn't show or any other "empirical mechanic" can figure out, such as small misfires due to spark plugs. I am saying this because some 4th Gen TL's in the past have been suffering from cylinder misfires caused by bent spark plugs during assembly. These misfires somehow are so small they don't throw error codes.

But do inspect the spark plugs first one by one, replace them just to be safe. Just a thought!!!

Can I go else where to get this done? Or does it need to be a Acura dealership?

Spark plugs is there a DIY on how to? Or location? I may have an idea but just want to be certain. Coming from a 335i N54 it was right under the engine cover assuming it would be the same if not the gray tops shown in the engine bay correct?

If anyone else has the diagnostic HDS that honda has, sure. Tons of videos on youtube etc on how to change plugs. No different than any other car. Logic and patience.
