Clunking sound when turning
Clunking sound when turning
Hi All,
I recently changed my tires to my summer tires and since i have been hearing a clunking sound from the front end when turning. Typically i only hear the sound when it is a sharp turn or going around a roundabout. Almost sounds like something could be rubbing against each other. Alignment is fine - car drives smooth going straight and the steering wheel hardly budges when going over speed bumps or pot holes.
Any idea what it could be? If so would it be covered under warranty?
Thank you.

Are the tires or tires and rims the same size as your winter tires? Maybe some rubbing? Double check your work and look at the fender well liners for signs of rubbing. $0.02

I should also mention that when putting the tires on, i do recall hitting the brake discs with the tires very slightly. Sound when turning does sound similar to that.
Also its FWD. winter rims are 17', summer are 18' - not the first summer with this pair.

Sounds to me like the CV joint boot is torn. Easy way to tell is go under the car or turn your steering wheel to the right and left and look at the rubber boot. That is usually the culprit as the rubber is prone to ripping and tearing after time. If it's ripped or torn call up your local stealership as "axles" are covered under the 7 yr/100,000 Mile powertrain warranty if you bought it CPO. If not, you can go to Autozone or NAPA and buy the whole axle. This sounds crazy but buying a rebuilt axle is cheaper than to rebuild the cv joint boot at the stealership. Find a local mechanic and tell him/her to put it in.
