Clear Coat and Chorme starting to peel

Hey Az members,

My hood and trunk clear coat is starting to peel like if my car had a sunburn. The Chrome on the OEM 19inch wheel is also starting to peel... I never pressure wash my car. Handjob only! I was wondering.... is this covered by the 4year warranty?

Thanks for the help!

you can try. call and ask. I remember reading a class action suit on Honda paint.....

HOWEVER, if the sun did eat through clear coat, that would fall on the user.

as the user is the one who is supposed to take care of the paint, by applying a wax or a sealant to protect the car from the damaging sun rays and up keeping it.

It's likely an obvious question, but is it original paint? I had my own issue with flaking clear coat, but that was due to a botched repair. I posted about it in the regional forum, as a warning about the company, but can repost here (don't rember how to link to a specific post):

Previously, I posted having gone to Auto Details (155 Street and 105 Ave) for some small damage repair. I was please with the work (May, 2014), though a bit disappointed when I noticed what appeared to be a couple of door dings on the repaired side on 6 months later. I put off doing anything about the dings, as it didn't look like it was through the paint.

Last Friday night, I went through a wash (touchless), and the following morning, noticed that a patch of clearcoat had flaked away from the bottom of the rear driver side door. My initial reaction was to be pissed with the wash, but it didn't take long to realize that this was not usual, and then I realized it was on the spot that had been previously repaired.

I'll see about posting some pics by the weekend.

I took it to Topline, and they agreed it wasn't the fault of the wash. Said it was unusual, but they've seen that happen on rare occasion, and that it should certainly be warrantied.

So I went back to Auto Details and showed them. They seemed surprised as well, but then suggested that it could happen if rocks hit the side of my car, and water got into the chips. That's not the case here, and it was pretty obvious; the rest of the car is pristine (at least as pristine as one can expect for a 2009), whereas the door in question has several small "bubble" spots, some flaking that's ready to go around the handle, and the big flaked portion already discussed. But no rock chips or pits. Their offer: they can fix it for $599, but I'd only be on the hook for half ($299) plus shop supplies (another $45) and GST.

Topline has offered to work on their price for me, and even give me some sort of credit for a gift certificate I have at Auto Details. It would still be more at Topline, but I'm tempted to go that route, if only because I know it will be done right.

Allegedly the car had never had any damage of any kind. Starting to wonder... I'll see what the dealer has to say since the Chrome and the mags is also flaking.

Thanks for the input!

Did you use any harsh cleaners on the wheels or the paint? Having paint peel off the rims is usually caused by chemicals vs age or anything else.

What color is your TL? Darker colors tend to have clearcoat failure with "crows-feet" appearing on the large flat areas that face the sun all the time.

Soft soap only. Dont use them for winter and only 4 years old.

The car is black, best color for sun damage indeed but its only the trunk and hood. If it was sun damage I think it would of been the same concerning the roof.

dont be sad.

certified used means pretty much nothing, but thats beside the point.

used cars will always not be "perfect"
