Black Off Leather Coming Off - Rear Seat

Just yesterday as the weather was warmer I was cleaning down the leather in the car and putting some leather conditioner on and I noticed that the rear seat on the driver side by your legs (where your legs would bend) the black of the leather was coming off. The leather itself is fine, but literally the black was coming off, and its white underneath.

I have never seen this even in older Acura's - and my back seat is very rarely used (my driver seat doesn't even do this).

Could it just be a leather defect?

My car is under warranty - but how would Acura even fix this? Replace the entire back seat with a new one?

I will post some pictures later.

Sounds like a defect, although I'd be curious to see a picture or at least the outcome.

What were you (and have you normally been) cleaning it with?

Sorry for the delay in pics - had to head out of town

Its only happened on the rear driver side seat, all other seats are fine and I have been using the same cleaner since I got the car over the leather everywhere (without any issue) - Zaino Z-10 Leather Conditioner

take a look at the pics and let me know what you guys think - also to fix it, I assume they have to get me a completely new full back seat?

Holy cow. I haven't had that problem with mine. Heavy creasing, but no loss of color. Take it to dealer as defective. It is odd that the color underneath is white.

I also see three darker spots. Might this seat have been repaired before you got it?

Bought the car brand new in Sept.2009 - but I am almost sure it was a dealership showroom car, so maybe something then

I haven't noticed the darker spots you mention, maybe just because of the picture or cleaning - but the colour coming off is a first, you can basically scratch it off and its white underneath..

I am pretty sure it will require a full new backseat to fix

You could try black shoe polish. I've used this in other vehicles.

I need to that leather conditioner...

I've been opening my sunroof a lot the past 2 years without any regards to how the direct sunlight will affect the leather...

I have noticed my khakis have black on them around where the pocket is located. I wonder if the black is wearing off of my seats? I really never thought it could be the seats but was looking for the culprit. I am going to take a closer look for confirmation. Stay tuned...

@wmahmud: I was looking at the service manual, and apparently the leather cover can detach from the actual seat. So if anything, the dealer can replace it easily. I would claim poor workmanship on the leather.

Here's the thread where you can get the service manual: https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...2&postcount=40 Once downloaded, look for this file: "Rear Seat Cushion Cover Replacement.pdf"

My drivers seat started flaking, they replaced the seat cover, which just slipped over. They said they only replace seat covers once, because its a wear and tear item, not good. I think the seats are to soft.

UPDATE: was at dealership last week, the service manager (through the front desk guy) said no its not a defect and its impact from my child seat, even though my child seat is securely and always been setup on the opposite side (passenger side) - so I have no clue where this excuse came from, and frankly, is pretty poor way of pushing the issue aside

I have opened an issue with Acura Canada and sent them pictures and details of my visit to the dealership - honestly, for something of so little cost to keep an owner happy, I am pretty dissapointed

No update from Acura Canada yet

And yes as someone else mentioned - it is flaking away, but this seat barely gets used - even my drivers seat doesn't have an issue and I am in it everyday and have been for the past 75,000KM for 2.5 years !!

^^^^^

Are you the only driver ? Have you ever lend your car to somebody else ?

Since you've mentioned that that portion of the rear seat had hardly ever used, but the stains and the wrinkle marks shown on your pics said otherwise.

^ Obiously the odd person has sat there before, what I mean is compared to my driver seat that I am in everyday, the backseat has no reason to start doing that

The stains you see (remember this are iphone pics taken quick) were right after I just wiped the seat with zaino and just quickly rubbed it in and around, thats what you are seeing

Either way - Acura Canada and the Dealership agreed to do this one time as a good will gesture and will replace the rear seat cover (not sure if that means the entire seat, or just that portion can be replaced)

Nice! Good to hear they're replacing it. It's just the seat cover. When I looked at the service manual, the seat cover unhooks from the seat on the underside. Just make sure that they stretch it out and hook them correctly. Otherwise it'd look horrible.

I've attached the service manual for seat cover replacement.
