2012 TL SH-AWD burning oil since Day 1

Hi all,

I found this website after googling around. I am in the middle of an ordeal with my TL. So it is since May of last year that I got this Acura TL 2012 SH-AWD 6 speed manual and it has been burning oil at rate of 2.0 to 2.5 qrt about every 5k miles since day 1. At first the dealer GM told me to ignore it is part of normal break-in process and said it should never happens again. Another 5k miles later the same thing and then he got his service guy to do oil consumption test for 5k miles. The first 1k miles the oil didn’t move according to dip stick. The next 1k miles it burned a bit over half a quart and he added oil. The next day the manager sent me an email saying according to Acura it’s perfectly fine for car to buy 1 qrt every 1k miles. Basically the service manager abruptly ended the test. I have been telling them the oil burn rate isn’t steady. Somewhere between the last 4k miles is when 2.0-2.5 of oil is burned. I have been calling Acura client relations and they kept telling me to go work with dealer. When I told the girl from acura clients relation about what dealer told me she believed the dealer and I pressed her that it isn’t normal for a modern car to burn 2.0-2.5 qrt oil every 5k miles she got all rude. It doesn’t appear the Acura client relations people received any sort of basic 101 auto training and I think this dealership I bought the car from is blowing smoke up my ass.

I have such a bad experience with Acura and their service. What is my recourse since I don’t have a huge pile of dealer receipts to prove my point? Like clock work when the car computer calculated my oil life at 30% I have to add more oil because it’s 2.0-2.5 qrt low at that point. I can’t let it go down to 10% fearing the engine will be out of oil by then. It isn’t normal that I have to change oil pre-maturely. I also concern my catalyst converters is taking a beating. I don’t know what other headaches I am in the store for later down the road.

Any suggestions?

I have a 2011 SH with 5800 miles. I bought the car in Jul'11 with 90 miles. After reading this thread, I checked the oil in my car and it shows more than 34th on the marking. MMI is saying 30%. Dealer has asked me to wait till 10% to bring the car in for oil change.

ionian2k, can I ask whether Acura ever resolved your issue satisfactorily? I discovered the same issue when I first bought the car, and was told it was "normal" for its 1qt/1000miles oil consumption by the dealer. Long story short, I monitored the consumption every 500-1000 miles and kept topping it off using Mobil -1 5W-20, but now at just shy of 60K, it started making this really nasty tapping noise. Brought it back to the dealer and they told me I basically would need a brand new engine. My dealer has escalated the issue to Acura and now I am waiting to hear back from them.

Just wanted to know how your situation was resolved?

Any help advice would be greatly appreciated.

I experienced oil burning issues with my 10' TL SH-AWD. (3.7 )
I encountered the issue around 50k.
The dealer had ran an oil consumption test, as required by Acura/Honda.
My TL would burn anywhere from 1qt/ 500 miles and if I was lucky, only 1 qt/ 1000 miles.
In my case, it was certainly on the extreme side.
My dealer had no issue with replacing the engine.
The entire short block was replaced, as well as the starter, timing belt, and tensioner.

I would definitely press your service adviser to replace the short block.
It is especially easy if you have a strong "bond" with your dealership.
I did all my service there, so they didn't mind making good on the repair.

If your dealer refuses to replace the block, try another dealership.
If all else fails, contact Acura Client Relations.
However, I must warn you that the people there are the rudest bunch of a******s!

My dealer believes the issue lies with defective or unseated piston rings.
Also, the nikasil lined cylinder walls may play a part in the issue.

For what it's worth, I have ceased using synthetic oil since Acura replaced my motor.
I have found no oil burning issue/loss since using standard Acura motor oil.
It may be coincidental, who knows! My two cents.
