2012 3.5L Steering wheel vibration at 70-75 and 80-85 MPH

Hey,

So this is a known issue right? I've just noticed this issue a month or two ago, never really paid attention to the actual speed of the car when I felt a faint vibration through the steering wheel. I always thought it was wind or the road. But this seems to happen consistently at those 2 ranges (70-75 and 80-85).

I remember people here have had this resolved through warrantied work.

I know it's a long shot, but if you did have this issue on a FWD TL, can you please PM me? My dealer is saying that they won't cover the shaking issue cause they believe it's a wheel balancing issue which they only cover for ~6 months after purchase. They won't test it due to speed restrictions. If you got it warrantied, can I get the invoice number and dealer info, so I can forward that to my service center?

What else can I do with this? The car's a 2012 w/ 31k miles.

Mine does the same thing. 70-75 which is the speed I drive every day. Speed Limit going to work is 70.
When I bought the car I had them check the balancing on the front tires thinking this was what it was. Not the case. Rotated tires... Same thing. Mine has just unter 12,000 miles and am guesing it has somthing to do with the electric stearing!
I have not talked to the dealer about this. But it is the one thing I dislike about the car.

I declined the balancing, but they did it anyway and waived the fees (awesome) but the issue is still there. I have life-time alignment at my Firestone dealer, I'll take the car there soon and get it aligned and see if that affects anything.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but figured I'd throw it out there. When I bought my aftermarket wheels the shop could not get them balanced properly (even with a road force machine). It wasn't until they removed all the tires and re-mounted them on the rims while aligning them properly that it worked. I guess there's an optimal spot on the tire that lines up with the rim (layman's terms). Good luck!

First things first. Take the wheels off and clean them. I mean, seriously clean them to the point you can use them as a dish to eat from it. Its amazing how the smallest piece of debris stuck on these wheels can throw the entire thing off balance. If that doesn't work, along with the balancing, check if one or more rims are bent. Yes, it is possible to bent a rim. While you can't see it from the outside, it may be from the inside. Balancing won't fix that.

The bent rim issue might actually be a valid point. There are some huge and annoying potholes around my area, and I have hit one a while ago going fairly fast. The wheels are sparkling clean! Inside and out. I'll make sure the actual threading is even all around, and there's not a tire with substantially worn out threads. I will need new tires soon anyway, probably in the coming 6-7 months.

I will share my experience with mounting and balancing motorcycle tires which require much more attention to detail and proper balancing due to the extremes they are subjected to. I can't say that this applies to automotive tires but the practice and theory is sound and proven with bikes.
Many tires come new with yellow or red and sometimes both yellow and red dots. The red dot should be matched to a dimple or mark of some kind on the wheel while the yellow should be lined with the valve stem.
This is great explanation from Bridgestone;

In short mounting the tire to the wheel via either of these methods makes balancing easier and ensures a better outcome. My 2008 TL-S had the worst factory balancing job ever. The dots were no where near where they should have been and the factory compensated for this with an 8' strip of weights.

As I said in my responce, The car had this problem driving it off the lot. (bran new, 0 miles) I thought it was the balancing also. As I said they checked the ballancing and it was right on. Had them rotate front to back, same thing. If it is still happening no matter what tires and wheels are on the front the problem is somthing else.
