Hey AZ, your starting story sounds just like mine. I was being proactive just like you due to the "...may damage transmission..." line in the Technical Bulletin.

Well I have been driving the car the past few days in all kinds of conditions and I'm glad to report that the software does fix the problem. But, it may be at the cost of lower MPG (too short of a tme for me to notice yet) like a few have reported. I will be monitoring my MPG the next few weeks and report back.

The car is so much livelier now. At times I feel like I was driving a Porsche (ok, maby not ) but man, accelerating on to a highway feels twice at fast now! Who knows what this will do to the engine and TC over time.

Dude...I want the Porsche update too! Instead I got the software that makes my car vibrate when you put a quarter in it between the 25 and 32mph mark.

So I dropped the dealer today my to get my oil and rear dif fluid changed (A16) and they found a screw in my tire that is non-repairable which is $350.00 to replace the Michelin HX MXM4 245/45/19...ouch

They gave me a MDX loaner because they don't have the tire in stock. Since it's there for a day or so the techs will check into the Judder again. We'll see...prayin' for Porsche!

I'm glad to hear they fixed your issue though. Congrats!

My guess is that you will get the Porsche upgrade, only because you spent some cashola ($350) on them.

Funny that while they were trying to figure this out, my A16 reminder also came up so I had them change the engine and read diff oil ($130 total). So my theory is that you have to spend some money for them to do anything under warranty for you....just kidding....I think?

I just had mine updated today. It is a much better car to drive. Judder is gone. MPG who cares when you buy a 3.7l Engine that uses 91 octane , does MPG really matter?

When I go from Reverse to Drive I hear the transmission noise which is the SH-AWD shifting gears on the rear differential. I have had this since the car was new, Dealer said it was normal. To convince myself, the dealer let me take out a Loaner Car, and it did the same thing. Friend has a MDX, SH-AWD, does the same thing.

Kingmeow...

dealership had my car for 3 days...long and short of it...they could not reproduce the slight vibration so nothing else was done since they already upgraded the software for the issue.

Oh well I'll live with it, cause I love this friggin' car!

I was notified about this update when I visited the dealer for service, and later I got a letter from Acura regarding the same issue. They apparently applied a software update, which they told me was "preventative".

I never had problems with vibration or noise, but I occasionally have jerky shifting at low gears. The update did not fix this problem...

The update only has to do with when the torque converter goes to lock up, so it wont fix anything regarding shift quality. These arent the smoothest automatics around, so some firm shifting, especially when the car is cold, is kinda normal.

My TL seems to have the exact same problem you are describing. I thought the torque converter applied to only automatics? My TL is a 6MT.

if your having same shudder id get your propeller shaft inspected cause the bearing tend to go when the car is warm and cause vibration as well.

Dam, I suspected as such. Thanks for the info.

I already have filed a claim with Client Relations but have been too busy to stop at the stealership, who have in the past given me the "we can't detect it" run around. I'll have to make a point to stop by ASAP.

You're correct. Manual transmissions don't have torque converters.

Update

Torque converter replaced
Been a couple weeks since I got the torque converter replaced under warranty and results are better I do feel something in the shadows. Nothing major. The shudder is 99% gone. I do feel like it will reappear down the road but I could be wrong and I hope so. Gonna do a tranny flush With the new synthetic oil and see. I'm happy and also noticed a better fuel consumption average.

Will keep you guys updated.
Sorry for thread jacking

2012 TL - Torque Converter

I own a 2012 TL that started acting up about 4k miles ago. Started hesitating as it was shifting out of 1, 2 and 3. Not so noticeable to my private mechanic but when I drove it with him he definitely felt it. It can easily be mistaken for a bump in the road but I drive this car 2500 miles a month so I'm very familiar with it. Took it in to my Acura dealer yesterday and it needs a new torque converter. They told me they had been back and forth on the phone with Acura (corporate? tech division?) all day. They are replacing the TC and then re-grouping with Acura to see if it needs anything else. Any other 2012 owners having this issue?

Already got the software update last August, but recently I have been feeling a lot of vibration in the 4th gear at speeds around 35-40MPH. Always felt it before but not as much as I do now. Now, it vibrates and the RPM drops below 1. Could my torque coverter gone bad? Thanks

I just called an Acura dealer and the service desk person acted like she didn't know what I was talking about an needed to bring the car in. After a few minutes talking to her she was like "yeah i've heard of that upgrade, but you need to bring your car in to see if it's required for your car."

While searching around for this bulletin #12-029 I came accross the following website: http://www.automd.com/ that gave me this:

2010 Acura Tl Power Train Service Bulletin 348513

NHTSA: Action Number: 10049199 Service Bulletin Number: 348513
  • Report Date:
    Oct 19, 2012
  • Component:
    Power Train
Summary: Acura: see document search button for owner letter. A software update for transmission is available for the torque converter lock up clutch where the judder is felt while driving, and extended warranty is applied to torque converter if j

It cuts off after the letter J. Does anyone have the actual letter where this came from?

Noticed that most of the vibration is happening when the A/C is on. The RPM's seem to drop below 1 when in 4th gear and there is heavy vibration that can be felt and heard, Anyone experiencethis yet?

Does anyone have the solid reference number to give to the Acura dealership. I just bought my TL and I've noticed the shudder the most when going from 1 to 2 but sometimes in other gears. Typically when accelerating heavy its a bit more noticeable.
They updated the transmission pcm or TC..whatever. But, i can still feel it. Of course they say...our mechanic couldn't feel anything.

What do I do next....Any recall number that replaces the TC all together?

also, they did recommend changing the fluid for 109.00 which isn't horrible price but I don't want to spend my money when its their issue.

transmission issues with 2010 acura tl?

I had my wife's acura tl 2010 transmission oil changed, regular routine about changing transmission every 30k miles told by an acura technician. My mechanic unscrewed transmission bolt and found a little chip (size of a clipped nail)and tiny metals all around the magnetic bolt. He told me it's not a good look for the transmission at 70k miles. I'm curious if this is the same for every 10 TL technology.

Also the vibration in the cabin when driving too is a big concern for me. I'm really not impressed with the new TLs. I personally drive a 2007 TL with 160k miles and my car drive and perform better than my wife's 2010 TL of 70k miles. I kind of regret her buying the 2010 TL, it would have been better off buying Honda Accord V6 of the same generation as the 2010 TL.
I need so solid information on the 2010 TL technology package and how to go about fixing the issues.
