2010 TL 3.5 broken ring lands
2010 TL 3.5 broken ring lands
My 2o10 TL has 150,000 miles on it and driving down the highway lost a cylinder. Had 210 lbs of compression on 1,2,3, and 4. 150 on#5 and 90 on #6. I took the engine apart and the ring lands were broken on 5 and six on the intake valve side and to the right. I bought this car with 140,000 miles on it and changed the oil three times in the last 10,000 miles with mobil 1 synthetic. anyway I cant find a reason for the broken ring lands and im afraid to put it back together until I know what happened. Any ideas? there seems to be very little info on the newer acuras.
That strange few questions do you know
1. If the car 105k service was done before?
2. How is it with oil? And what is the oil temperature like? Does the car seem to run hot. Are you burning oil
Because that is a little mutch for you to change it 3 time within a 10k period.

I suspect that the engine was badly abused at some point. Replace all failed parts. Oil starvation due to blocked oil galleys or passages is one possible explanation. I'd remove the oil pan to see if there is debris. Then remove the valve covers and inspect for blockages and debris. Oil filters can fail and fill the lubrication system with small fibres that block or restrict oil flow. My friend destroyed a BMW engine that way. I'd use a good engine flush. I'd also check the crank shaft bearings for excessive wear.
I've never heard of a well maintained Acura engine experiencing this type of failure.

Thanks for responding guys.
The car ran perfectly the first 10,000 miles. no indication of overheating, low oil pressure or anything. I have the engine completely torn down now, and I can still see the crosshatch in the cylinders. Nothing obvious.
But this engine is slightly different than the 60's and 70's chevy small blocks I'm familiar with!
I cant find parts anywhere for a j35z6 anywhere other than a dealership.
Is there somewhere I can get a manual for rebuilding this engine?
Oh and I changed the oil when I first bought the car, at about 3,000 and again at another 3,000. Was hoping to clean the inside of the engine to head off this kind of problem.
Thanks Everyone
