Test fitting Megan Racing exhaust

Hey TL folks,

Just wanted to share a few pictures from yesterday at the test fitting for the Megan Racing Catback system (4G TL 3.5). I'm lucky enough to do some R&D and get to build the system with the company. It will be a full 3'' system once it is completely built. The piping in the pictures are currently a full 2.5'' all the way through, tips I believe are not final yet, but will be dual 3'' or 3.5'' as these are samples. I think a J-pipe and test pipe are up in the air right now but I will see what I can do.

Additionally I would like to build an electric cut out 4'' after the flanges connecting the resonator piping to the cat. I also would like to test an electric cut out on the test pipe replacing the cat. I know its biased but it's a little mod on the side that I like to do on some of my cars.

This is by no means of advertisement or attempt to sell a product. I'm just the guy who gets to suggest bits and pieces. Either way the whole process of being involved and help building an exhaust system is quite exciting. I'd love any input or feedback as I will be relaying the message and this kit will go into production within the upcoming months. Hope you enjoy the camera pics!

*There are two different tips in a picture as we are just sizing it up.

3" tips will look way to small on the wide rear body of the car.
4" tips will be a more balanced fit.
Instead of having a test pipe just make a long J-pipe that elimantes the 3rd cat. my .

ditto on fyah's comment..

you need to run 4 inch tips.. as they are the right size for the rear of the car.. it may differ for the 2012 models but for the 09-11, the rear gap on the rear lip is just way too big to be sticking in 3 inch tips.

either way, it looks good, cant be perfect.

have you heard how much they are selling these for?

Looks very a high quality product, especially on the weld joints.

Swoosh – I agree the piping looks good and even these sampletips are doing their part. I will get a video/clip (with a GoPro) up when thesystem is completely finished.

Fyah TL – I agree I do like the 4’’ tips on other systems. There are a lot of tips to choose from and once the tone of the system is finalI will make tips next priority. I think the idea of a catless J-pipe issubjective as some people would like to keep their stock cats. I can definitelyfind out more about this, it should cut costs down instead of buying twoseparate parts.

Potmilkz – Have heard nothing on the price of the systemyet, but I assume it will be under $1200. It’s very possible with a group buy it might even be lower. The closer it gets to production the closer I can smell the numbers.

Edward’TLS – I agree 100%.

I would like to revise the tips and extend them out 1.5'' or 2'' so they are sticking very slightly outside of the verticle lines of the bumper. I doubt there will be enough heat to cause any minor damage to the bumper but then again better safe than sorry. Another thing I've been comtemplating is the tapered tips, the tips are already double walled angled and look great. Idk if there should be any adjustments made to this...its also very unoriginal to go with the tapered tip lengths. On another note, I was very surprised about the electric cut out, its loud, beefy and not as much drone as I expected. It's quite pleasing to me, hope to get a video over the weekend.

whoa.. if its anything over 1000, i think people will jump ships to atlp or xlr8.. i was expecting this system to be roughly about 600-700..

I'm only assuming because my word is not credile in pricing it might be $800 or $850 like their other systems. I mean the GTR exhaust they have on the site is under $1200.

The system looks good even in prototype stage.
I had Megan exhaust before and the quality was first class. On top of that it was affordable.

i wouldnt say first class as they are pretty much mainstream companies..

I had HKS, Greddy, BC, J's Racing, etc. before and the Megan in term of material and craftmanship compare nicely to them. No, I wouldn't say Megan is better but then again their stuffs doesn't cost as much.
At least they are making parts for us that will be available within a reasonable amount of time.

true on what you said.. i wouldnt say that it was made in a reasonable amount of time being that the 4g came out in 2009.. nearly 4 years ago..

its a cheap exhaust option.. i hope it is near a 600-700 price range like the rest of their exhaust systems.. some revision and it can be a good seller.

I'm not too familiar with all those brands, but it's great that a company has taken interest to develop and introduce new products as options for the consumer. I only hear about XLR8 and ATLP, which are great systems, however, it can't hurt the TL platform within the little options it already has.

AccessPhoto - The RS5 is the owner's car, he also owns an F10 M5. CBE & Coilover systems are being produced for both vehicles as well.

Reasonable time as to when they decide to make something, testing, and coming to market. I doubt they even look at making anything for the TL until recently. I don't blame them as there're so many more popular platforms for them to work on.
If they bring out their system within the price range you listed then it will be a popular option.

Danyoung I sent you a pm.

Its coming along great those welds look flawless. I think some burnt tips that give it that blueish look would be nice. I saw a Lexus IS-F with quad burnt tips the other day and it definitely looked real badass!!

Ken - Pm replied.

I think burnt tips look alright but they vary depending on the tips + the noise your car makes. However, I have not seen any TL's with burnt tips. Maybe I'll request a set and do a photoshoot as reference, it could get ugly...it could turn out nice. If demand is high enough for the TL systems the kit could go into production as titanium. There's not much power our TL's can produce all out, so any chance of weight reduction would be great. (Not saying a whole lot lol)

Anywho...in the meantime does anyone "not" have an exhaust system that are looking into one? What brands, custom, or ideas you got planned?

Cut outs installed, one before the resonator and one after the resonator. 3 levels of sound adjustment for preference, this is a mod that I personally did aside from the MR system, it will different from final product. Will get a clip up when I get home if its not too late. Opinions/Criticism is appreciated.

I've noticed that BMW is going to black tips on some of their sport models. Maybe that should be an option as well.

Finally got a clip up, these are the cut outs I installed. I really did not have time to create a good video but my wife did catch a sound clip inside a mall parking structure. Out of consideration for my wife I had her stand a bit away from the car and did not rev with cut outs open before the resonator. In the clip these are Corsa RSC Mufflers I used to install where my stock resonator use to sit. Notice there is no rasp, there is minimal cabin noise, and most definitely not for everyone. This system will be gone when my Megan Racing Prototype comes in, however in the meantime I like to have a little fun in the city. I flip a switch and it reverts back to my stock exhaust and wisp quiet. Will get fly bys and take off videos when I get a chance.

Yea I know...just playing around with it temporarily. I think I have 3 weeks until the MR CBE gets here. On a side note I sit behind a wacom cintiq for 12-20hrs a day so the 20 mins it take me to drive home I prefer a bit of excitment.

Yes there is, I’m currently waiting on a Test Pipe they’ve sent. It should arrive today or tomorrow around noon. I did not want to post premature information until I have a product I feel is good enough to share. That way people don’t get the wrong impression of the actual MR product. The clip I posted above is something I did on my own.

On a side note I have a scheduled test drive with a Tesla Model S this Saturday so it’ll probably be sometime over the weekend before I can get any clips up of the Test Pipe+Non-resonated system. I’ll also have a few drive by/fly bys with the MR system and the cut outs. (2 different systems)

Buying one, I already put down the $5000/down. From that day you have 60 days before it goes into production to decide if you want to purchase it or not, make any changes or adjustments and of course the battery size/charging options. Ultimately its $5000 to test drive as a walk in, but I hear you can make an inquiry on the website and it'll take anywhere from 2-4 weeks for someone to contact you with more info and a free test drive.

Test Pipe, looks like nothing special just a pipe. But I will say it sounds better than having the 3rd cat, sounds more crisp, throttle is heavier, more low end torque + throughout powerband. It's definitely noticable and I'd recommend getting rid if anyone is looking for a sportier feel and immersiveness.

I do have videos and will get them uploaded on Youtube tonight. GoPro sound quality is not the best, but you can get an idea of what it sounds like. I will record more videos with a better camera/mic.
