Speaking in general terms...

the exhaust is pretty restricted from the factory.
the factory jpipe comes off the pre-cats which then flows to the rest of the exhaust..Like headers.

pre-cats-->jpipe-->factory exhaust.
free up any one of these and you get more power.

I have an '06 TL...I'm stock save for a jpipe.
made the tone a little deeper, but not louder..
I suspect if I change something after the jpipe the decibels will increase

The J-Pipe was the first mod I did on my car. I had it on for over 3 months before doing any other mods. It BARELY increased the sound at all, mainly because the cats, resonators and mufflers all still did their thing. It was only after I put on a third-cat delete pipe did the sound become more distinguishable, but not to the point of annoyance. It even took my wife a week or so riding in it to ask if I had done something else to the exhaust after that test-pipe was added, haha.

It will give you a gain in HP (although I can't give you an official number, 10whp might not be a stretch) and it increased my highway gas mileage by at least 1.5mpg due to the increase exhaust scavenging ability and better flow characteristics.

Increase exhaust flow which translates to more hp/tq. The sound won't be altered much.

On the 3rd gen 3.5 motors we saw gains of 10-15whp and 15-20 wtq.

How come after u install the j pipe. You can't just bypass the third cat run straight pipe to mufflers? Why spend the money on a test pipe or HFCB?

Because that would sound ridiculously loud?

on the 3rd gens, we do have a jpipe that completely gets rid of the 3rd cat.

Because of the mounting flanges. You'd either have to put them on your straight pipe or remove them from the J-pipe and the rear part of the muffler pipe (before the y-pipe).

In either case, it's just easy (and probably costs about the same) to buy a fitted test pipe with the flanges already on it.

No it wouldn't. It'd be the same as J-Pipe plus test pipe.

Some people don't want to eliminate emissions components. So we offer a j-pipe that just replaces the factory j-pipe and the option to eliminate the third cat or replace it with a high flow cat.
