Is this like the K&N system where I would have to oil the filter? Is the filter washable? Also after it is installed can the plastic engine cover be placed back on?

The filter is a dry filter. It is washable. Yes you can reuse all engine covers.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the inner workings of cars (people think I do because I drive a stick shift), but how will this increase performance and can an idiot like me install this?

It flows more air than the stock intake; an engine is like a big air pump. More air, more fuel, more power.

It comes with instructions and the intake is a fairly straightforward install.

Is there anyone who has actually installed this? If so what are your thoughts?

Have you noticed any power gain or louder engine roar when accelerating?

I installed my j pipe and test pipe from Excelerate Performance before the intake. I can notice a slight difference in the low end power with the intake. The sound is very significant on WOT (wide open throttle). When driving normal it sounds stock.
