Custom CAI

Sitting at work today I had a thought, what about instead of waiting until 2018 for a true cold air intake for the 4G, make one custom. Looking at the bend of the takeda pipe, if one were to take 2 takeda pipes, or just 2 pipes of that size, connect them at the bend where the filter normally goes, remove all of the old intake plastic (resonator, etc.) and drop the filter down below into the bumper then heatwrap everything, that would give us a pretty good alternative to a cold air intake, similar to the style of the 3G AEM intake and the AEM V2.

I'm looking to the experts here for an opinion because as far as mounting and connecting the two pipes (rubber cylindrical sleeve that attaches the top pipe to the throttle body maybe?) I would expect the biggest problem to be rattling down in the wheel well. Let me know if anyone has done something like this for our cars.

^what about cost?

it would be easier and cheaper to use PVC pipe (in black of course).

or you could rip the factory resonator out; and extend the tubing using the factory velocity stack.

both ways achieve the same thing.
both are cheaper than buying TWO takeda intakes.

whats so hard about making your own intake? dont even need any name brands, it'll work even better. Remove the X in the v6xp

Ha yea that's basically what I was thinking....I only used the takeda as an example. May try to make my own this weekend ill let you guys know how it goes. Which material would reduce heat the most or at least resist it the most?

I like the plastic idea. PVC.

if not, you can coat the aluminum with plastidip.

Would the PVC withstand engine bay temps? And would it resist heat transfer as well as aluminum piping? Great find on the make your own btw thank you!

comptech is coming out with one.. hopefully within this year.. id wait for that..

imo.. cold air intakes cause nothing but trouble.. they get dirty faster and the chances of flooding your engines are off the charts.

This.

That's why my 3G TL now rests in peace. Totalled that one, used insurance money to buy an MDX, then missed the TL so much I also bought a 4G after seeing all the tastefully modded TLs on this forum.

I built a custom intake for one of my previous cars and it worked great. You could get 4" or 5" SS piping and have it mandrel bent to fit. Then take your design copyright it, think of a cool business name then sell it on ebay.

Also they sell the bypass filters (like a foam material) or whatever that you can put in the intake before the throttle body so if you do suck up water it wont get into the engine.

wait; your statement is confusing.

was it totaled?
or did you suck up water?

two very different things; when talking about intakes.

I'm wondering if he meant he totaled it by sucking up water...

Yes, the car was totalled.

Car sucked up water, motor hydrolocked. I was driving in an unfamiliar street at night , and I underestimated the depth of the puddle at a small intersection. The AAA guy came to tow it but decided to crank my motor even though I told him not to.

The insurance quoted the motor damage to be around 8k, which didn't necessarily mean it had to be totalled, but that was my preference (insurance adjuster was accommodating and worked the paperwork for me).

At that time, I was thinking of selling the 3G, and this just kind of worked out.

I just wish I had enough time to take off my ATLP exhaust before they took it away
