Nav update for 2011 TL
#2
Update CD's, or in the case of the '09+ 4GTL, dealer installed uploads, aren't always worth it. You need to decide how much travel you will be taking and what area's you'll be driving in to determine if it's worth the time and money. Even then, any newly finished roads and shopping/eating stuff might not be included. I've been unnessesarily routed off one freeway in central Cal only to find that it had just been realigned a year earlier.
I bought the update for the RDX, but I think I'll wait on the TL until it's a good 5-6 years old.

to see the damage to update. I agree with the previous poster, the newest disc isn't always better, in fact 2 updates ago I think it made mine worse.

Just pop it out of the unit in the trunk. Note the color of the disc and the version. Then check on-line

Westside - the update for the '11 TL is not in the trunk or the glovebox. It is loaded to the hard drive by DVD. You can order an update via
http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT.../Default-Start
It does not need to be dealer installed, either. Instructions are on the web site.

Well, according to the Acura Navigation Center site there are specific requirements to purchase the update:
"Your navigation system Device ID, Database Version Number and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) are needed in order to purchase a map update. Click here for assistance in locating these numbers."
Once you have the 2-DVD package in hand, perhaps you can install it in another vehicle. That said, you'd probably be violating a NavTeq License Agreement.

Just Installed "Purple" 2013 Update
I just installed the 2-DVD Navigation update (Purple 2013...released 9/2012). I used the "Full Power" option which essentially meant that the data on the two DVDs was loaded onto the hard drive in the car, and then the machines went through the update process. The initial data loading took forty minutes (with the engine running), and then the update process for the maps, etc. took two hours (with the engine running). I did both of these processes while driving.
The initial load has to be continuous, i.e. no shutdown of the engine, but the update of the system can be done intermittently, i.e. stopping and starting of the car. FWIW, the navigation unit, the screen (except for the backup camera), and all audio functions except AM-FM, XM, and Bluetooth Audio were lost during the process. There is another option (chosen at the beginning of the process) which takes up to six hours, but keeps those functions working.
Results are I went from version 2.3 to the most current version which is 2.7. I'm probably seeing something which is not there, but the maps and graphics look a little more crisp to me. My neighborhood seems to be a lot more detailed than it was, and the locations database appears to have expanded some.
Two-disc set is only good for one car. A 16-digit password is required to make this work, and the licensing agreement prohibits sale, transfer, etc. The 16-digit password is apparently issued by the "Acura Navigation Center" for a particular vehicle (VIN required) and a particular Nav unit (16-digit code for the unit required).

Just ordered the 2013 map update for my 2010 TL. I just bought the car a couple of months ago with the original 2009 maps installed. I found it very outdated in my area, so I pulled the trigger.
FYI: 2009 - 2011 Map Discs are RED whereas 2012 - 2013 are Purple. They will not work with each other, so make sure you select the correct model year of your car when ordering. I got mine at acuranavi.com

Thanks for posting this information. I imagine (without any basis for doing so) that some hardware piece changed between 2011 and 2012/2013, so the red disks are appropriate. I bet NavTeq techs go nuts with this kind of thing.
