Question iPod search ordering rules

I have a 2012 TL. My iPod has about 7,000 songs, 500 albums and 200 artists. I don't use playlists. I would like to search the iPod by artist, choose an artist, then choose an album. Instead, when I search by artist, and choose an artist, it pulls up a listing of songs. I know the software will allow me to pick an artist, then an album, because I accidentally got it to work on one occasion, but I don't know what I did differently. The default seems to be to pull up a list of songs, rather than a list of albums. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Not near my car right now, but can't you search by album?

Yes, I can. But it takes too long to search through 500 album names. I can't remember all of the albums names. I want to select an artist, have have a list of 10 albums to choose from.

It worked that way once, but the default setting is that when I select an artist, it pulls up 120 songs titles, instead of 10 album names.
