Full Power or Background Nav Update

Ordered the new nav update. The Full Power update takes 2-hrs, and the Background update takes 3.5 to 5 hrs. I assume that the longer load will result in a more complete update. Any suggestions?

During the Full Power update the nav head unit is completely unusable until it finishes updating. The background update after an hour or so allows the use of the nav partially.
Just go with the Full Power update. The update pauses, whenever you turn the car off and resumes when you restart the car. You can still listen to music while the update is going. For me over a 2 day period of driving from work and whatever it finished.

I'm a newbe, so I don't know the difference. Reading over the installation guide those are the two options. It doesn't tell you what the difference is between Full Power verses Backgound.

From page 3 of the update manual:

Full Power: ~2 hrs, Navigation not operational during update
Background: ~4.5 - 6 hrs, Navigation operational after region update

So the difference is whether you want to use the Nav during the update. In both cases the radio and XM work fine.

So you were able to update your navi just by driving around? Did that work OK? I'm interested in updating my navi on my '12 TL, but I don't want to have the car sitting still with the engine running or take the chance of draining the battery.

Well we finally did the "Full Power" update. Once you start it the nav system is inop. It will automatically resume the update every time you restart the car. I did discover the difference between "Full Power & Background." If you select "Background" you can still use the navigations system, but it updates in the background as you use the nav, hence "background," and that is why it takes longer to update than the "full power."

Just start your car with the update and drive like normal, my commute to work is 30mins back and forth so 1 hour everyday. So yeah it takes about 2 hours to finish the update.

I ordered my map update on 6/18 and it arrived rather quickly, even though I chose the cheapest shipping option. I went ahead and followed your advice, figuring that if you had a problem, you would have said so. I had no problem updating my navi while driving around, and it appears to be working properly. I still thank you for your reply, though.

As an aside, although it was no big deal, I noticed that if I shut off the car with the radio on, the update would turn the radio off when I would start the car again.

It was that simple. We have just taken a trip, from NC to TX and it was wonderful. I really like the major freeway intersections, and exit windows that pop up with the vocal of next exit or next right etc.

I have a 2011 TL that I purchased in Jan 2011. Is the update a significant improvement over the version that was included in that model? I have been leery of purchasing it since I seem to get very good nav support with Google Maps and they are not only free but very current. The only big advantage I see to the car's system is it's satellite based and will (usually) provide me with accurate info in areas of the country that I cannot get cell service.

Thoughts?

Are there new graphics with the nav update or is it strictly just maps?

I have a 2012 TL and live in Canada... Occasionally will drive down to New York. Is this update worth it?
