Advice re: JBL speakers

Hi guys.
I'm going to attempt to replace my door speakers which are terrible. Can anyone please advise me as to whether these speakers are suitable/appropriate for my 2010 base model TL? Thank you.

They are JBL P662S full range speakers, 2 ohm impedance.

Moving right along ... got door panel off....

Thanks to the very helpful posts on here I got the pass side door panel off fairly easily. Speaker is definitely shot.
Sounds the worst on am radio which I would
only ever listen to for test purposes, lol.
Still hoping someone can suggest a good replacement or comment on the JBLs. (?)
Thanks.

(New member here, but did a lot of sound upgrading on my previous Honda Accord over the years)

For regular door speakers (being powered off the stock amp), they seem like they'd do the job. You'll definitely notice an improvement over the stock speakers.

I've noticed others installing the Reference 6032cf and the JBL GTO638 speakers with GREAT results. I myself ordered the 6032cf and am simply waiting for them to arrive. Probably gonna go with the GTO638 in the rear deck, as the previous owner of my car really abused the heck outta the OEM speakers (-_-).

Best of luck with your speaker install!

Ahhhhh...I also forgot. Infinity Kappa Perfects are another speaker that a lot of people absolutely rave about. Look into these as well.

Thanks Lendo. I assumed the P662S were better than the GTO 638 simply based on the fact that they are slightly more expensive. I am going out for some exploratory shopping today so thanks for getting back to me!

Took the easy way out!!

One of my options (in my mind) was to upgrade to the better tech model speakers from Acura. While I was at the dealership parts dep't checking it out they offered to replace the original speaker under warranty, no charge, so I took them up on it. The new speaker sounds OK so for now I'm happy with the system. I still think it's a little weak, since I like it LOUD, but I can always do an upgrade after the warranty is up If I feel the need for better sound. BTW, the upgraded speakers (which I did not do) are Panasonic and they're $48 Cdn. ea.
It turns out the bad speaker was really, really, bad! lol.

Because the system is 2-ohm JBL or its sister company Infinity would work easy. The Acura 6.5" drivers are full-range so the addition of more efficient 2-way drivers will add a little more volume and a lot more clarity.

@ParaSurfer1979 and vivmike: I COULDN'T agree more!!

Hmmmm...I'm actually going the route of both ideas:

Going to replace the front speakers with the Reference 6032cf, and the rear deck speakers with the GT0638 (better frequency response to compliment the sub)...however...since I can't decide on what type of woofer to put back there, I simply ordered the 2011 TL Tech subwoofer to replace the horribly-abused-by-the-previous-owner stock sub (to tide me over for now). Just gotta get some Dynamat for the door and rear deck, along with a panel popping kit (no butter knives or flat-head screwdrivers on the interior of THIS car), and we'll see if this'll do the job for now.

Lendo, please keep us updated if you do the replacements.
The dealer told me the upgrade speakers (from tech model vs. base model) all have the same connectors and are basically plug and play.

I installed the JBL p660c which is an older version of the 662. I like the mids but the tweeter is just ok. I didn't hear them (couldn't hear them) before I bought those. So a year after using them I am thinking of replacing it but because of the 2ohm limitation I don't have any good options (like Hertz or Focal or Polk or the others). I am not comfortable replacing the stock Amp either.

Has anyone installed a 4ohm speaker in the front with the stock amp. If so how does it sound? Thanks for your updates.

Even the tech speakers are complete garbage. Get a nice aftermarket component set, a nice amp, and a DSP. It will blow away any Tech TL.

I'm thinking about doing the front speaker upgrade also to a 2013 non-nav tl. Any difference between the Reference 6032cf and Reference 6032si other than the mounting depth (2-1/16 vs. 1-15/16)?

Ya they're the same other than the mouting depth. I have the cfs. They're really bright (lots of high end) but will mellow out after time. Huge improvement over stock. Also the stock are not 2 way only the mid-bass speaker so you will get more treble from the door than before.

Great, thanks. I think I'll go with the cfs too although I am a little concerned about them being a 2 way speaker. I was thinking about using the Image Dynamics midbass driver, but I'm concerned about mounting depth and being able to drive them with the stock amp.

Finished the front speaker swap today. Everything went extremely well thanks to all the info I found here. I'm going to try the rear speakers next. Does anyone know if there's a tutorial for the rear speaker swap?

Thanks again for all the help.

Did you decide on the Image Dynamics mid bass drivers for the front door? Can you take pics of your install?

I actually went with the Infinity 6032cf. They had a lot of recommendations. Couldn't really find anyone that put in the Image Dynamics. Let me know if you do. I'd be interested in knowing how they sound. Sorry I didn't take any pictures.

You failed to say how they sounded. Ive had these speakers before. I like bright highs as much as I like some quality low end too. That said I've always been a 1 8"/10" guy. Never 2 or 3 subs taking up my trunk. Im into balance more than waking my neighbor's...lol.

Rear is easy. Just make sure you triple sound deadened the plastic speaker cover. I removed my factory sub and speakers...and still wrapped the crap out of it. I prefer a front stage only.

ParaSurfer1979, that's because I really didn't have a chance to listen to them yesterday other than 5 minutes in the garage. I had a lot going on, but took the time to put them in anyway (although my wife wasn't happy about it). I did get a chance to listen to them on the way to work today. My intitial impression is exactly what I expected, a little bright but a big improvement over stock. I did think I would get a little more bass out of them, but maybe it's because I'm driving them off the stock amp.

I agree with you about balance. I've been down the route of CDT components and custom built JL audio subs driven off Memphis amps, but that's not what Im looking for now. Just nice clean sound that I can enjoy on my 2 hour commute to work.

vivmike, I still like the fill from the rears. Thinking about putting the sam 6032cf's in the back. I heard that the entire back seat has to come out to replace the rears/sub. Is that right?

@Sammy-r

There is a thread on here that someone installed the Image Dynamics in the front doors but I can't recall the results but I would be interested too. Do you have a base or tech TL? I have a SH-AWDwith the base system and I am leaning towards the JBLs that Jim mentions in the top of this thread. I would be interested on how the JBLs sound vs the Infinitys.

TC2010shawd, I have the base model. I chose the Infinitys because I used them years ago and was happy with them at the time. I don't have any experience with the JBLs.

Do you plan on replacing the stock amp to see the improvement that would make along with the Infinitys?

No, I was only planning on upgrading the speakers unless the ELS amp would work. Anyone know of a subwoofer that would drop in and work with the stock amp?

Finally got the rear speakers changed today. The back seat came out really easy, but not so much for the covers on the "C" pillars and the back deck cover. Under the "C" pillar cover was a metal stud that pushed into a green plastic connector instead of the normal plastic clip that just push into the body panels. Really struggled getting these out. Anybody know what they are or if I should be worried that I damaged them?

That "green clip with a metal pin" is a special one-time-use clip.

You cannot reuse them, and have to buy new ones (from the dealership) to reinstall the pillar cover afterwards.

That's not good. I didn't know that and re-used them. I think I'd have to pull the rear seat again to replace them at this point. Do you know the downside to reusing them? Could it effect the side air bag deployment?

These clips are designed such that once the installer bangs the metal pin down, the claws on the green plastic part will be forced apart to securely fasten the pillar cover from inside the metal car body.

But if the pillar cover is not fastened up properly, in the event of the curtain air bag deployment, the loosened pillar cover may get blown out.

Edward'TLS, thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be pulling the pillar covers again and replacing the clips. That's something I don't want to take a chance on.

As for a possible stock sub replacement. The shallow mount 8" Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 dual 2 ohm looks like a possibility. It's getting good reviews on Amazon with people replacing there stock sub and running it with there oem head unit.

I wonder if the stock amp has enough power to drive it. Has any done this upgrade? I think I'm either going to do the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 or the Infinity Basslink.

Post an update with pics if possible if you do the upgrade. I would be interested if the Rockford Forgate sub would be a good fit in the stock location.

I put in the Image Dynamics 6.5 in the front and the 8 inch dvc sub in the rear deck. Wonderful sound. I had originally tried the Infinity 6.5 and a JBL woofer and they did not sound good at all. The only issue I have now is that the speakers are underpowered compared to the remaining stock speakers - mainly the tweeters. Considering replacing all speakers with higher power versions or inserting small amps with high level inputs between the existing amps and the sub and fronts.

Does anyone have any pictures or how to installed the front and rear speakers?

I order Infinity Reference 6032cf for the front and GTO638 for the rear.
I'm still staying with stock amp for now.

But this will be my first time installing speakers and know little about audio. So any help of installing or brackets that i need will really help.
