4G Base Aftermarket Radio Install

I haven't seen any one post about this yet, so I figured Id put up some info and a pic. Metras new kit for 09-14 came out in May- 99-7808B. Honda harness and ant adapter.
I didn't take photos on radio removal, but both side pieces snap off, and then the air vents snap straight out. (4) 8mm bolts remove the radio.

Transfer the Air controls to the new kit and mount radio(double din or single din)

If you just use the honda harness you will only get sound out of the front speakers. I ran RCA's for an amp at a later date. I used couplers off those and another set of cheap RCA's to cut off and tap into the factory amp inputs(passenger side rear behind trunk panel)

There is not a lot of room behind the radio, but it wasn't too terrible to get everything to fit.

Sound with stock stuff is ok, not terrible but better than with stock radio.

I was hoping someone would be me to being first this time. I was hoping that the A/C controls would not be lost. I've been waiting for this kit so that I could move off of the OEM headunit and amp. My TL is already equipped with aftermarket process/amps and speakers. This is the last piece to the puzzle. Much appreciated for the pic. I'll post pic and final system once Kenwood DNN992 is installed.

I've had a change of heart. My TL is getting up there in age and I don't think I'm going to throw any more money it's way. I'll probably put my system in another vehicle as soon as I find one I like.

Thanks for the pic I think it looks good. Sounds like a complicated install though.

I get very little glare on the screen. May depend on what type of unit you have, my wife's kenwood isn't as bright and would have issues.

Hello Mark, first of all great work. Looks nice!

I was about to install this as DIY this weekend, however noticed you mentioned that only front speakers would work with harness that comes with this kit. In that case how did you make rear speakers and subwoofer work? Could you detail out the steps and some pics if you have? Thanks and god bless you.

Hello Mark,
I have few more questions -
1) did you have to buy an aftermarket amplier? or factory one worked?
2) I have bought following items, do I need anything else?

kit 99-7808b
wiring harness 70-1729
ant adapter 40-hd11
aswc-1 module for steering control retention

FYI, I decided to go with Pioneer avh-4100nex unit.

Thanks!

I ran speaker wires to the rear deck speakers. I will eventually swap all speakers and amp them but for the time being that was my easy fix.

How did your install go? I'm thinking about doing this in my 2013 TL base. I had a question regarding the wiring harness. Can Metra harness 70-1730 be used instead of 70-1729?

That large blank area below the stereo would be a nice spot for an Acura emblem.

I guess maybe I missed it...why does the Honda harness not have rear speaker connections? And why are there no rear speaker connections in the dash? Is there only a low level signal wires that lead to the input of the rear amp which powers the rear speakers? Is there another amp for the front speakers? A complete wiring diagram would be nice to have.

So I looked at the factory wiring diagrams and there are preouts for every speaker signal in the system at the head unit (obviously), so why not tap into these pre-amp signals via RCA cables connected to front, rear, and subwoofer RCA outputs on the head unit?

After some deliberations, I have decided to take the plunge and get an aftermarket head unit for mine 2010 Base TL. Over the last few days, I have been able to read/watch lot of reviews on Kenwood's excelon DNN992 and Pioneer AVIC 8200NEX. The UI & functionality of Pioneer 8200 had me sold on it. I have also decided to go for some bells n whistle and get myself a backup camera (Esky 17-09) and Maestro RR (iDatalink). Though it looks like the installation is not that difficult, I have decided to go get some professional help. Just don’t feel like messing with the cabling.

The thing I am not sure on are the speakers & amp. I do want to get component speakers, however not sure on which ones. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Were you there when they install the head unit? What model of Pioneer that you have? I guess with professional installation you have all the speakers working right?
Like Mossman77 stated, why can't we tap into the pre-amp signals on the head unit??
Can anybody please chime in?
Any help is appreciated..

okay so I am now ready to do this install on my 2012 TL.
How did you get the climate control to display on upper screen?
Would you happen to have a wiring diagram or happen to lead me to where i can find the name for the connectors in the photo provided?
Before I purchase I want to do a little research as to plan and map put my installation. I am gonna go xtrons Andoird 6.0 head unit, using factory amp and speaker. Anybody nkow the name for the various connection points?

Having a hard time telling, were any of these models the Pioneer AVH-4201NEX? If so, any issues with the steering wheel controls? Backup camera work ok?

Exact install in progress

I have been researching this install for about 8 months now.
I have all the pieces in place. I will do a 2 head unit install because the only kit in existence for the 4g TL is made by metra and it call for you to remove the entire Audio navigation unit and you will have a dead factory diaply screen up top.
so i had to :
1. Find a head unit shallow enough to fit. (only the chinese head units are shallow enough. Found an AWESOME android head unit on amazon.
2. Retaining the back up camera was one hell of a project. Because they use a 12 pin connector that is EXCLUSIVE to this generation, a simple adapter will not be found. I had to build a custom harness for it.
I found a trunk lid on ebay for my year make and model and asked the guy if I could buy the harness that was in the lid. He sold it to me. Now I have a plug and play retention harness for my rear view camera.
I am currently working on making a few of these to sell.
3. I wanted to keep the factory AMP ( to me that thing sounds AMAZING). So metra makes a factory amp retention harness to keep it.
4. you will lose Climate control display ( i am currently trying to find a way around this) it possible, just have to find the right pieces.

I have attached a photoshopped image of what It will look like before and after. I plan to do the install this weekend. MAybe, if my radio antenna adapter arrives by then.
The key to creating any custom adapter is gettting your hands on the Official Service manual because there you will find the wriring diagrams for EVERY system in the car. That can be found here:
https://redirect.viglink.com/?format...al.pdf%3Fdl%3D

I finally bought it and uploaded for those who have been looking and had no luck like me.

Feel free to ask me ANY questions i'll do my best to answer.

It's almost done.
Ive installed the two head units.
But the guy That was installing it, is kind of expensive So I'm waiting to have the surround view camera installed or maybe install it myself.

TIll then here are the current issues:

• Instead of running the wire from the rear view camera I made the connection by splicing into the harness that fed the Nav Display.
There is some picture quality issues because of the down grade from Digital/RGD to Analog RCA. Still trouble shoot

• As expected I had to cut a small piece of the plastic behind the Factory Nav to fit the Upper head Unit perfectly.
The clips that Held the factory Display in tight are still there so If I ever wanna revert to factory I can.

• Steering wheel controls have to be installed, the head unit came with them but that one is too complicated so gonna go for the METRA one which has all the adapters

• The Buttons on the actual Head Unit Arent illuminating so that has to be looked into. Im sure its a wire that I failed to connect.

It looks AMAZING Though and the bulk of the functionality i dreamed about is there. I'll be updating you soon. My car is in the shop right now for some tranny issues. Ugh. Of course As soon as I get this installed my car starts to act up

Looks awesome, very nice work. Surround view camera? Any details on how you are doing that? What are you usually using the top head unit for?

Gentlemen, I had this same install done to my car. I gotta say I was disappointed with the sound quality.
I'm missing a lot of mid-bass. Just didn't have that oomph that the factory system had. My rear view and side mirrors don't even vibrate anymore.
Any ideas for better sound quality I'm all ears!
I ended up applying dynamat to the rear deck and it does sound better.
I have to install dynamat in my doors and see what happens.

Also has anyone looked into how to retain the factory clock and compass? I just think the top screen would look better if it had some more functions than just the climate controls? Thanks!

Here's what I have:
Pioneer NEX 8200 head unit.
Center Speaker Pioneer TS-A878
Front Speaker, Unknown but I do know they are Pioneer speakers. I purchased these from the installer
Rear Speakers: Pioneer TS-A1686R
Subwoofer: Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 shallow 8 inch 2 ohm Sub
AMp: Kenwood M8005 marine amp. (I bought this for the size. It fits nicely located where the old factory amp used to be.)

Yes any updates you can provide please, I'm looking to put in an alpine ilx-107 in mine soon. What did everyone use for steering wheel controls? I like the dual functionality of the idatalink maestro. PAC audio cp2 seems to be most popular with hondas. Any insight guys?

Looking for update too! Crutchfield mentions you have to run speaker wires and splice into the factory amp (in trunk) on the outboard side. Any info/advice on how to do this and get the rear speakers working with an aftermarket deck?

Yeah....I had it removed. I realized, my personal taste was for the Factory System. The 10-speaker 440Watt ELS makes me forget im driving. NOTHING VIBRATES even at the HIGHEST VOLUME.
Im not a fan of distortion of any kind. If I hear even the slightest rattle, im done. so what my plan is now is to simply use navtool video interface with carplay and the surround vie camera. im doing research on it now.
There are tons of universal 360 View Cameras systems, but they all look so...after market. There is a company I am meeting with about repping for them. It looks pretty factory. I'll keep you guys posted.
And just looks very

Cool

I ordered this from Fry's

Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX Navigation Receiver with Carplay/Android Auto

I am looking at this too.

ADS-MRR Maestro RR - Universal Radio Replacement & SWI

what else do I need for now I have the base system from the factory. The salesmen at Fry's said I may need an amp for it to work.

I looked into it as far as a Advanced SH-AWD trim and I wasn't possible without spending thousands
and hiring engineers. ALSO, I want to say at least with an aftermarket install on the base models you have climate controls on the upper screen. The Tech and Advanced models you get NOTHING but a blank black, Unused upper screen.
I did this mod, I didn't like it compared to the stock sound.

Hey CMWO, The climate is independent of the radio so basically you unplug and unscrew the climate control unit from the factory housing and screw it back onto to the metra kit.
