Hey guys - long time lurker, short time poster here. I have a 2010 FWD with the Tech package and the 18" wheel option. Pretty much looks like an SH-AWD without the actual SH-AWD. It has just about 45,000 miles on it.
Anywhoo, some jackwagon came across a double yellow line and creamed me good. Claims he was looking down at his radio. Tore up the whole driver's side of the car including the front and rear bumper covers. I was just wanting to get some opinions on whether or not you think the car is a total loss. I live in Virginia and the last I heard was that the damage has to be 75% of value before it can be declared a total loss. That would put the magic number for the damage at 15K as far as I can tell.

You have your video set to "private" on YouTube so it is not playable for anyone but you. There is a setting on your video dashboard to make it public of accessible only to people with the link.

I'm thinking that it's in the neighborhood if $15k, give or take 10-15%. I had some guy blow a light and jump out in front of me, I was able to swerve but he kept going and ended up hitting my front passenger side front end along with damage to both passenger doors, damage wasn't even close to OP's car and my damage was about $5,500.

Pretty sure it's going to be more than that, when someone rear ended my car last year, the estimate came out to 16k to repair and it was no where as bad as OP's collision.
Guy was obviously texting or doing something negligent. Good this you have the dash cam. It's obviously 100% his fault, which would have been hard to prove without the cam.
At least he didn't cause you to spin out and get side swiped.
I started looking at dash cams after the yahoo that blew the light hit me, but never bought one. After he hit me, no one stopped as a witness and as the cop was writing the report I basically told him that the guy admitted to me he blew the light and the cop said he admitted the same to him, thank goodness because he could have said I blew the light. After looking at the video, it's probably time to purchase one.
I personally think that the determining factor in whether or not it is totaled is what kind of suspension damage there is. I'm pretty sure that the front will need some work, and after looking closer at the pics, the back wheel might be toed-in too.
I'm going to visit the body shop tomorrow to see what's up. I'll keep this thread updated if/when I find anything out.

Wow. Watched the video and that wasn't what I had in mind from your description. I thought maybe a little over the line but he was like heading for an offroad adventure through those yards.
Looks iffy, depends on who you insure with. Good news is your OK and did not over correct causing your TL to roll up the embankment.

how big is this thing? does the power cable have to be plugged in to work at all times?
JT: It has a pretty small footprint - probably around 2"x3" or so. The power cable is a mini-USB on the camera end that plugs into the 12VDC power outlet. The camera mounts to the windshield via a super-sticky adhesive mount that allows you to easily remove the camera. The power cord is long enough that I can run it through the headliner, down the "A" pillar, under the glove box and over to the power outlet. The TL allows for a nice clean install.
I highly recommend it - I have this camera in all of my cars and have been very pleased. I think there are YouTube reviews out there if you search.

I have been thinking about getting one after my first accident which was the other guys fault but he claimed it wasn't (luckily i was in a situation were the pictures post accident provided i was right)
I have been putting it off but i prob shouldn't, i already have the radar detector up there and idk if running a second cord would be too much to hide, decisions decisions.
Yikes, that could be a close call on totaled or not.
Glad to see you had a cam, I have the same one for my wife in her Ford Edge. It is really pretty small and available with a capacitor instead of a battery, to survive cooking in South Florida. I wanted to use the extension for a cleaner look but it came down to far so I didn't use it. Here are a few pics of hers I just grabbed.
I dont think it is totaled. I flipped my Xterra on its side and had to have that entire side and the read door replaced and was not totaled. Close but not totaled
OP, you should find a way to retrofit a CPL on your dashcam so you can reduce the reflection of your dash.
As far as selection of dashcam, OP has a decent one but I just wanted to throw a couple of other ones out there if anybody is thinking about getting one:
If you're on a budget and you live in a warmer area. It uses a capacitor battery so it won't blow up in warmer weather.
If you're not on a budget and would like one of the best, look into this one. The quality is amazing. You could find sample videos on YouTube. The design is very similar to OP's
WTF was that idiot doing? People that pay that little attention to the road while they're driving should just not be allowed to drive IMO.
I would say there's a good chance it will be totaled. The entire left side, front and rear bumpers and who knows what else needs to be replaced. My coworker's 2014 Civic Si got hit pretty hard in the parking lot at work. The car was not touched in front of the rear fender. This was about $12k in repairs. Obviously, his suspension was tweaked but your car has easily twice as much body damage.
Wow, is that just another rebranded cam? I found numerous different names of the wedge camera I have but the dashcam forums said to look for the Novatek processor and you should be good. I bought the external GPS antenna to track location and the capacitor model but it wasn't $200, about half of that. I also went ahead and bought the mini USB hardwire kit for under $10 for a clean install.
Regardless, I like the piece of mind and my wife likes that she doesn't have to turn it on and barely notices it. She thought it was silly at first but the longer she lives in South Florida, the more she realizes people suck and can't drive.
Oh, as Chevy found out, some states like FL require you to tell people you are audio recording so please keep that in mind. It seems silly you can video record with no problem but I just muted her mic so we didn't have to worry.

I think Street Guardian is the original thing. You're right though, the Novatek 96655 processor is important, but what stands out with the SG is the Sony Exmor CMOS sensor.
OP glad you're safe and that you had a dash cam to prove liability. Easy to say, I would've done xyz in that situation, from the comfort of my desk but playing devils advocate here why didn't you accelerate and attempted to turn/veer right instead of stopping and wait for impact? I doubt you could've avoided the accident completely, but at the very least centralized the impact to the rear quarter panel.
The only way to know if its totaled is to get it appraised. And remember, a dash cam is a two edged sword; great when you are in the right and not so good when you're not. And don't think of getting rid of bad video cause you can then be hit with a spoliation of evidence claim for failing to keep it.

Great question Heart! The only thing I can say to that is that if you study the video, I had around 3-4 seconds to react from when he entered my field of view to impact of the car. There is a pretty substantial drainage ditch and culvert to the right of the street so I didn't really have a lot of room to accelerate and veer right to avoid him. My frame of mind was that surely to God he would see me and correct his course before hitting me. Check out the attached pic and I think you will see that I had nowhere to go. I think that if I would have veered right and accelerated, I could have been injured and damage to the car would have been much worse!

For me, personally, I wouldn't bring up the dashcam in an accident unless the other party lies. If he accepts full responsibility, which is good he did in this case, I don't see any use of my insurance company having the footage.
