TL or Genesis
I recently sold my 2007 TL 3.2 AT, simply because I was bored with it.. but mainly because miles were getting very high on it.
My mind has always been set on a 4G TL manual AWD, until I truly started looking for them/looking at prices. They vary from 24-27k (used), depending on mileage. Which is still in my price range.
What caused me to have second thoughts: test driving a 2014 Genesis R-Spec manual (coupe)...
- RWD is fun.
- Interior is nice (no where near as luxurious as Acura though).
- 348 hp is quite fast.
- 100k warranty.
Price: 26-27k (brand new)
The downside is the seats are not comfortable at all, my back was in pain after an hour of driving the Genesis, and the fact that I haven't driven the AWD TL in manual makes it difficult to conclude what suits me better (all 5 hours away). I feel as if the TL will not disappoint me, then again, I could be wrong. I don't want to buy the Genesis because it's a better deal (the obvious reason that attracted me), then regret it later.
My question is for you 4G TL AWD manual owners. How do you like your car? Be specific and honest, please! PS, neither car would stay stock for long.

If you're aching after an hour of driving, how you gonna feel daily driving it? That'd already be a deal breaker for me. The TL is very comfy between daily driving and long road trips. It may not be 348hp but it has enough power to have fun. Plus, it's AWD!
Agreed, it pretty much was. That's why I negotiated then they accepted my offer, and I changed my mind last minute. I think if it was the right one and I was 100% happy, I would not hesitate. However, the reason why I still have it in mind is because I can replace the seats if I wanted. Not sure if that'd be worth it or not lol..
For me, I would not sacrifice comfort especially on a DD.
If it was a weekend car, then that's a different story.
I think Hyundai did a nice job with the Genesis but do test drive the TL SHAWD and see which you prefer.
I agree that if you aren't comfortable in the Genesis, don't get it.
That's coming from someone who just traded in an '11 TL AWD MT for a Genesis 3.8 Tech. I needed a more comfortable car, and for me, the Genesis is just that. Doesn't handle as well as the TL, but that wasn't the point (for me). I enjoyed the TL for 3 years until my back couldn't take it anymore - the MT is stiffer than the AT and New England potholed roads made it painful. The Genesis is softer and more compliant while still handling well for a car of it's size/weight. And the 3.8 is plenty powerful (333hp) attached to the 8 speed auto.

Not sure where you're seeing a brand new R-Spec coupe for $26-27k. A quick search on cars.com shows @ $35k. However, even at the lower price if you're not comfortable in it it's a bad buy.
I'm EXTREMELY happy with my MT TL. I've never once regretted the purchase and I still get excited to drive it. It won't outrun every car on the road but accelerate through some turns and you'll quickly forget that.

I don't have any input or never been in the Genesis but I do like it asethetically. My 4G has been solid since the day I picked her up. No issues so far. The Honda V6 motor mated to a 6MT just feels right. They make one of the best MTs in the business. Low end torque is kinda weak but Hondas are known for they're excellent mid range punch when the VTEC kicks in yooo lol. That is where the powerband or sweet spot is (and where the fun really begins). You will not get a true comparison until you at least drive both cars.
P.S.
When you get a chance to drive the 4G, put it thru some corners above 3K.

Comfortable seats are what really sold me on my car. I drove a BMW 335i, 535i, I even got to test out a Tesla Model S as my parents were looking into those and honestly, my TL beat all 3 of those cars in comfort of seat.
You really need to ask yourself do you want a coupe or a sedan? If looking at a coupe, I would pass on the Genesis and opt for a Mustang GT, or a G37. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a KIA/Hyndaui. If you want a Sedan then go with a 14 TL, the prices are fairly low with the TLX coming out. I personally enjoy my 2013 SHO, it's more comfortable than my TL and faster, plus you can tune the engine and get a pretty serious power return.
well... if Hyundai will beat Acura by depreciation & quality, I might consider them in future but definitely not now.
We work very hard to make $$$ and pay all taxes, why I would buy a car where I lose more $$$ then others?!
My favorite saying "I don't buy Ford cars (not trucks), cause I don't make enough money to handle depreciation...."
The new Genesis 5.0 with AWD looks to be a beast, but it isn't here yet and it'll be using new drivetrain in a new model year. I'd give it a couple model years before considering. That's not a strike against Hyundai's reliability - the current 5.0L Genesis is a verified bullet on 4 wheels.
Meanwhile the TL AWD is in its final model year with a proven engine, drivetrain, transmission, and tech. $8,000 below MSRP for an outgoing 2014 model isn't unheard of, according to the recent "what people paid" thread.

living in the Philly area, I need AWD....the fact that it was a manual trans was icing on the cake. been happy with it, more than I can say for my family as I can't help but to drive it hard...
As I get older, the genesis gets me more intrigued. is it a definite that it's getting AWD?
