Is there a guide on how to replace Clutch for 4th gen Acura TL?

Hey guys,

New to the forum. I recently purchased a 2012 Acura TL 6 speed. It's been a blast, sick ass J-series car and honda reliability.

It has 99k miles and I don't think the clutch has ever been replaced. I know at some point replacing the clutch will have to come and it will be a massive job.

This is what I'd probably get for flywheel: https://powerrevracing.com/products/...-clutchmasters

This is what I'd get for the clutch kit itself:
Amazon Amazon

Thinking of attempting the job myself. I've replaced a motor and clutch on a C5 corvette before so I have the tools and some DIY skills.

But I was wondering is there any guide for this procedure outside the service manual? Like maybe a video, or pictures to follow on the forum?

All i know is to use the factory throwout bearing, the ones with aftermarket kits are not that great. I believe LUK is the OEM one and the flywheel is a dual-mass one from the factory.

Don't rely on someone's DIY.

Download the factory service manual and look at the steps and tools involved.

The stock clutch hub is non-sprung.
The stock flywheel is sprung.
Which is kinda weird.

So...if you go aftermarket, make sure one of the parts is sprung or you'll have tons of chatter and harsh engagement.

I would stick with the factory design. Either an OEM replica from Rockauto, or (safest bet) buy the actual genuine Acura parts from an Acura dealer.

I recommend you don't use Amazon for anything.

You probably won't need a clutch for another 50K miles or so.

I genuinely hope I don't have to do this job for 50k more miles. I have the service manual but sometimes it can be a little confusing.

How much is the OEM clutch kit from Acura? I'm going to guess it's a shiton.

I just asked them how much a new manual transmission would cost the other day (don't actually need one) and they said 15k. That's literally how much I paid for the whole damn car.

I'll look on Rockauto, definitely taking the advice want to keep the comfortability.

Check hondaautomotiveparts.com

I would guess that all the clutch parts are like $800. Disc, pressure plate, and bearings.

The flywheel is probably around $1500ish

I can't remember if the 4G needs the self adjusting clutch tool or not. But if it does, that's $500-700.

Transmissions from an Acura dealer are always going to be expensive. Luckily, its not a wear item and you'd have to be actively trying to break it (so don't break it). If you do break it, you can always just rebuild it.

I couldn't find any aftermarket Dual Mass Flywheels for the 4th gen 6 speed. If someone passes by and has a link to one for sale let me know.

OEM Flywheel pricing is fucking ridiculous.

I am going to have to go with a single mass flywheel and a sprung clutch.

For the clutch I'd probably get this: https://clutchmasters.com/i-30499466-fx100.html

I can't even find a steel flywheel to pair with it, I'd have to get the aluminum that comes with the kit and deal with the chatter.

Really screwed on options with this car

Be careful with that website. When I clicked the 'Options Available' page listing $674.25 as the price for the FW-147-AL

It suddenly increased to $799.25.

Here's one on ebay for $616.25 with free shipping:
Clutch Masters Aluminum Flywheel For Acura TL SH-AWD 2009-2014 3.7L J37A4 | eBay

The stock clutch is organic

So...if it were me, I'd inspect my original flywheel and just "dust it off" if possible, using sand paper or something. As long as the clutch didn't wear to the rivets, the flywheel is probably fine.

I don't know if it can be successfully resurfaced. Maybe?

Anyway, you don't need a clutch for a long time (probably). So no point in making decisions now.
