Question for the 6sp auto owners

what is the minimum speed needed to get into sixth gear when on a flat level roadway? Also along the same line, what rpm's are you turning at 70 mph (flat level roadway)?

I haven't attention to the speed at which I hit the 6th speed but, at 70MPH, it's about 1800-2k rpm

Recommended Shift Points

Shift Up > Normal Acceleration

1st to 2nd > 15 mph (24 km/h)
2nd to 3rd > 25 mph (40 km/h)
3rd to 4th > 40 mph (64 km/h)
4th to 5th > 45 mph (72 km/h)

5th to 6th > 50 mph (81 km/h)

Is that for the automatic? My manual isn't a big fan of anything below 50 mph, but I don't live in a fairly hilly area.

I will double check mine on the way home. I could be wrong but I "seem to recall"

Yup, that's for auto;

Here's for manual transmission (page 492);

1st to 2nd > 17 mph (28 km/h)
2nd to 3rd > 27 mph (44 km/h)
3rd to 4th > 36 mph (58 km/h)
4th to 5th > 41 mph (66 km/h)
5th to 6th > 44 mph (71 km/h)

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm going to try 6th gear at 44 tomorrow, but I'll make sure no one is behind me and I'm on the clutch when it stalls...

Verified... 70 MPH = 1800 RPM, 75 MPH 2000RPM.. 80 = 2200

You miss-understood my question, I didn't want the recommended shift points, I asked what the minimum speed the car will allow you to up shift into 6th gear is with the auto trans.
In a 3G, the min. was 38 mph. Just wondering if it is different in the 2012's.
Also, based on what Stew reported (70 MPH = 1800 RPM, 75 MPH 2000RPM.. 80 = 2200 ) the 6th gear really is a lot more efficient than the older 5 speed autos. Especially since the engine is larger than mine.
My 3G 3.2L with stock 17" wheels and stock tires tach'd at just about 2000 at 70 mph.

Just looked up the gear ratios for the new and the old:
old new
1st 2.7 vs 3.36
2nd 1.61 vs 2.10
3rd 1.07 vs 1.49
4th .69 vs 1.07
5th .49 vs .75
6th na vs .56
Rev 1.89 vs 2.27
final axle 4.31 vs 3.73

That explains how the 12's get such good mileage

interesting.... i think i need to drive a 6AT.... as much as i love my 4G, the 5AT seems so legacy and unimpressive. better MPGs and quicker acceleration seem like a nice perk too!!
