Owned My TL for 3 Days & Transmission Being Replaced

Just bought my 2010 SH-AWD/Tech this past Sunday. Love the car, but as soon as I drove it home, the transmission would grind at 30MPH and a squealing sound would happen around 45MPH.

Dealer replaced the propeller shaft which got rid of the squealing, but the grinding sound was still happening. They were going to replace the torque converter today, but they called me and told me the entire transmission needs to be replaced.

That's is crazy to me. I feel like I bought a used Lemon. I love my car, but I hope this isn't the sign of bad problems. They are also replacing the drivers side speaker that is blown and rattling in the sunroof. The car won't be ready till after christmas.

Just traded in my '05 RL and never had any mechanical issues with it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Double check me, but I believe in KS and MO there is a 3 day right to cancel contract law. What dealership did you purchase from?

so you didnt see all this during your test drive?

if anything let them replace the transmission or anything that is needed.. if this is a used car.. think of it as getting new parts for free.. new transmission and shaft

Inhereted risks when you buy a car used. I was always a fan of the idea of buying what you can afford new and if you cant to just buy a cheaper car...saves you lot of headaches...You dont know what the previous driver may have done to the car...Never going used.

I had a similar situation with an '01 TL. I don't think it was as soon as 3 days, but it was within the first couple weeks. I agree a bit with Potmilkz... and try to view it as getting a free transmission. I was able to talk the dealer into giving a seperate warranty on the trans, as there were already 35k miles on the car. So, they honored the warranty on my transmission up to 135k miles. May want to go see if they'll go for that.

But, it also doesn't hurt to look into the local laws and see if you haev any buyer protection... you know the dealer isn't going to offer up that info.

Do you homework and I hope it all works out for you.

I bought it from Hendrick Acura in Overland Park. I only notice the sounds when the car is warmed up and driven at least 5 miles or so. So when I test drove it last week, I did not get a chance to warm it up.

The car is CPO bumper to bumper to 100K miles, has 60K now so Acura is covering all the costs. I am just surprised that they did not catch this when they did the 150 point inspection to certify it before putting it up for sale.

I am not mad and do not want to return it, just frustrated that I can't drive my car for at least a week. I'm stuck driving a slow ILX.

What has been the reaction of the dealership? Have they been apologetic about all of this or in disbelief? Just curious as I live in Overland Park. I have all my service done at Jay Wolfe and purchased both of my Acuras from Jay Wolfe....so far I'm not planning on trying Hendrick with this kind of thing going on.

Haven't heard a thing from the dealership, just the service manager. If they call me, I will go off on them for sure. I bought my '05 RL from Jay Wolfe. I got such a good deal on the TL at Hendrick that I couldn't turn down. I lost all trust in them. I will not be taking my car in for service or doing business with them anymore. I am telling all my friends, family & co-workers to stay clear.

Welcome RMJSE. I too can recommend (very, very highly) Jay Wolfe Acura. They are top notch. Send me a PM (Personal Message) if you need any names at Jay Wolfe. I know the majority of the people there. The sponsor our National Meet every year in June.

Sorry to hear you're having this problem. You probably won't hear from the dealership, but-a call from your salesperson would be nice. They should put you into another TL while you're waiting for your car to be fixed.

I have the same thing going on with my 09 TL SH-AWD tech. Too bad when I brought it in it wasnt making the noises. I bought mine at Hendricks. Who is your Tech Adam? As soon as I get a chance and it is making the noise I will take it into Hendricks and get it fixed. They wont take my word on it so I am SOL until I can get it to them when it is making the sound. The shifting issue for me at 30mph happens all the time. I jsut want to get them both done at the same time. I live in Lees Summit and hate driving all the way over there.

BTW what extended warranty did you get? I got the Hendricks one and am covered to 100k too. Mine has 67k miles and I had them order the same replacement speaker on the day I picked it up.

I too live in Lee's Summit (291N & 50hwy behind Home Depot). I don't know who my service rep is at Hendrick, nor do I care. I can't wait to get my TL back and take it to Jay Wolfe. Will never deal with Hendrick again.

When you go to Jay Wolfe's Service Department, go see Dan Keairns. Tell him that I sent you....he'll take good care of you!

Sounds to me that whoever traded in that car did so likely knowing the transmission was faulty and just didn't want to deal with it.

But if you are getting a new tranny out of it, consider yourself lucky. You may want to ask the dealer if they will extend the warranty for you.

Just got it back. They only replaced the Torque Converter. They "promised" me that if issue returns they will be replacing entire transmission, but I highly doubt it. Drives great and the sound is gone. I am just happy to have it back.

Here is a pic of mine, the black one on the left of course and my friends '12 TL on the right.

Seems odd that a CPO has 60k miles on it. I thought dealers only CPO'd lower mileage cars. In my opinion the CPO inspection they promote is mostly marketing hype. A fully inspected car with loud tranny issue....right. My CPO Legend coupe I bought had numerous obvious issues that any inspection would have seen.

I'd try to get more history on the car and get stuff in writing too. This big a failure would send red flags up, esp about trusting this dealer.
good luck, but I would thoroughly check Every detail on this car obviously the dealer didn't.

As far as used, I always buy used, most Acuras are a safe bet, but full test drives and inspections are needed.

Tell them that if they are that confident they should have no problem giving you an extended warranty. If not the whole car, just on the transmission. Either way I'd get that promise in writing.

My 2c... When I see CPO, I don't treat them any different then other used cars. I got mine CPO and two weeks later the road I see that hood, fender & front bumper were repainted with good but not the best job as should be as CPO. So, next time most likely used car again but with really detailed inspection...

I didn't go back to dealer but should have done it I think, at least to get some free accessories :-)

++++1. Way back when, my first car which was a used car eventually required both an engine & transmission. Started me into the land of learning how to do my own work. That being said s**t happens, just be happy they are standing up & taking care of it.
