Oil Consumption, engine seize engine damage?

I know there are posts about this already, but I wondered if anyone had ever gotten the dealership to replace the engine or any damaged components. I have a few other questions as well. I'll try to be brief.
1) Backstory: I've owned my 2010 TL 6MT SHAWD w/ 22,000 miles for less than 2 months. Driving it the other day, at 4500 rpm, the engine seemed to seize and lose power for a split second. The emissions and SHAWD indicators came on. There was a low oil message in the nav display, but not on the dash. The car was asymptomatic after that. I added 3/4 of a quart of oil, after seeing it at the bottom of the stick, and took it to the dealer the next day.
2) Dealer changed the oil and recommended a consumption test. They are going to check it again in 1000 miles. They did not take apart the engine to check for damage. Their battery of system checks didn't show anything. It is still under warranty, and successive, related repairs are covered. The warranty has since expired.
3) Here are my comments/concerns: Any advice is very welcome:
--Should I be concerned about engine damage already incurred? I would
think there would be damage, but I don't fix cars for a living.
--Even if it loses less than one qt at 1000 miles, this is still unacceptable. if
it loses 3/4 a quart at 1000, that's a lot of loss until an oil change is due.
If I wanted GM problems, I would have bought a GM. I read others received
the consumption test recommendation; what was the ultimate outcome?
--Does anyone have long term experience with this issue?

I'm very disappointed and angry. This is my second TL, the first of which does not consume oil in any noticeable way, if at all. I had a lot a faith in Acura. This is unacceptable in such an expensive car. The dealership said they would do repairs all the way up to engine replacement if the car loses more than a qt in 1000, but I'm betting it won't consume a whole qt (but that doesn't change the fact it's still consuming oil like a clunker). This is a fail.

were you given the option to buy warranty? personally to me, if the option of extended warranty does not come up for a particular CPO car i am trying to buy, i would not buy it.. fact is, its been used and only thing to cover your ass is a warranty for your first 2-3 years of ownership.. Loosing 3/4 quarts of oil seems to be a bit excessive.. remember the car only holds 4.2-4.5 quarts... i would wait for the first 1000 miles.. to see how the outcome is.

I was lucky and the damage occurred one day before the car's factory warranty expired. I still have concerns though. I didn't buy the car to abuse it; but I don't want to have to baby it for the next 170,000 miles either. I expected better.

OP, check out my recent thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-problems-fixes-297/2010-tl-6mt-excessive-oil-consumption-905239/

To summarize, I recently was short 2.0Q and am going back to the stealership for the "oil consumption test" in 1,000 miles. I have my doubts the stealership will do the requisite repairs, but we'll see.

I read it, thanks for you reply. Not very encouraging. I've barely had the thing 3 months. If they know some engines do this and others do not, they should replace the engine. I can't believe they didn't even inspect it for damage. Any 16 year old can tell you running an engine with low oil can cause all kinds of issues, not to mention the fact my engine not only seized, but there was no low oil indication before that. I was really excited about this purchase, and it looks like I got screwed.

Running your engine 3/4 quart low (if I'm reading your post correctly) is not going to cause your engine to seize. It's not great for long-term wear and performance, but there's no way it would cause a seizure. More than likely when the low oil sensor hit, it put the car in limp mode for a bit so no damage could occur.

BTW, you powertrain warranty lasts longer than the 4-year bumper to bumper warranty. I haven't checked in a while, but I think it's at least 6 years, 72K miles.

Last point - I discovered the oil was 1/2 quart low after about 4000 miles on my new car. I had never had a car (at least not a well-used beater) that used any oil between changes, and it really worried me. I had the consumption test done for awhile and it came back, on average, at about 3/4 to 1 quart every 4000 miles or so. In the old days of changes every 3-5000 miles, you might never notice this, but it is apparent now with the MID in our cars calling for changes around every 7500 miles.

The MT version of the 3.7 motor seems to use some oil for some people. I'm going to have a talk with my dealer before my powertrain warranty expires, but I'm not terribly concerned about it.

Start of Coverage

  • 12-month / 12,000-Mile Limited Warranty extends the new car non-powertrain coverage by 12-month / 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) and starts after new car warranty expires.
  • The 7-year / 100,000 mile Powertrain Limited Warranty starts from original date of new car warranty registration.

I'm currently undergoing the oil consuption test also. As you'll see in Docboy's post, i gave an update in there regarding my situation. I'm at 40% oil life right now, so within the next month or so, i will know what they intend to do.
