New TL television ad

Anyone catch the new TL television ads Acura is running? Quoting a previous review of the AWD TL, they say "the way this thing corners will drain the blood from your head," (or something to the same effect).

It's really hard to describe to someone what SH-AWD does for this car, but I think this comes close (even if it's not literally true).

Are you sure that wasn't a VIAGRA commercial? *lmao*

This is exactly what TV commercials are good at - exaggeration. But they sure get the job done.

Yeah - I caught that one the other night. Would love to find the write-up they pulled that from....google search pending. The TL of this generation has never been a media darling.

I have yet to get a sensation even close to that, haha.

The couple of times I've REALLY pushed it through a corner I think I was going a bit too fast entering it because my back end slid out a bit. I was able to correct it quickly fortunately.

I know that there's only so much SH-AWD can do but I'm still trying to find the right combination of approach speed and timing of acceleration through the turn. Someone enlighten me...

You need better tires. I've entered and then powered through turns posted 15mph, at over 45mph and kept accelerating.

Don't lift. Every inkling of driving experience is telling you to let up. Push down, and it'll squeal - but it'll stick.

+1. We usually let of the throttle thinking we are turning in too fast but most of the time the car handle ALOT more.

For example I had a track day, and I was letting of the throttle, the instructor said to push it the car will handle way more g's than you can.

I've got the Michelin P/S HPT's that came with the car...definitely sticky! They've got a good amount of tread left too.

Also, I didn't let off the gas in either of the scenarios I mentioned above.

The letting off the gas was an example I used.

Best performance mod I ever made to my S2000 was a 5 point harness. It's astounding how much more comfortable you are pushing the car to it's limits when you aren't fighting to keep your body on center.

What frequently happens is because you're holding on to the wheel, you get off line on an aggressive turn in because your weight is shifting opposite direction from where you're trying to get your hands pointing.

Now I'm not saying throw a 5 point in the TL and ruin the backseat....lol, but a seat belt tensioner does help.

SH-AWD does have a learning curve. As someone said above, the trick seems to be to get on the gas hard early, way before the apex. When every cell in your brain screams "brake!" you have to push the go pedal and trust the car. It will pull/push you through with aplomb.

Let it hang out there... Practice a little on a turn you know, when no other cars/people are around, and someplace where if you mess it up, you won't wrap you car around a tree. Nothing like the feeling of sliding around a turn. *turn you traction control off for this.

For FWD cars, you let up the gas pedal going into corners.

But for the SH-AWD, you step down on the gas pedal going into corners.

I've gotten balsy and pushed into a sweeping on-ramp in my area a couple of times. First thing to keep in mind.....if you lift completely off the throttle mid-turn....you now have NO WHEEL DRIVE!!! With no power being applied to any wheel, there will be absolutely no help from any wheel, and brix may be shat (from experience), so the key is to either remain on the throttle or accelerate during the turn. I will tell you, once you build up the confidence, are familiar with the road surface, and stay or add throttle the car will settle into the turn and amaze you! I prefer to increasingly add throttle while entering the turn so the tires can gradually tell me when to back off instead of carrying too much speed and having them "voice their opinion" early and maybe too late in a turn.
