Manual Mode - 1st gear

Hi guys,

Any idea why when you put the automatic transmission in the manual mode (sport shift) that it automatically shifts into 2nd gear without the driver using the paddle? Now once in 2nd gear, it will wait for me to shift to 3rd etc.. but it appears the car wants to shift from 1st to 2nd on its own.

My TSX never did that, it would stay in 1st until I paddled to the 2nd gear.

Its not a big issue, just curious.

Thanks

Read Owner's manual and the various litterature about the new 6AT for the 2012 TL. The car will shift in manual mode at 5500 RPM while in 1st gear only. it must be to protect the gearbox and such.

Have a good day

Does it shift early if you keep it @ WOT, or even automatically shift?

YetiTL....I am familiar with the idea that the car will shift automatically if the rev gets too high, this is not the case with mine. I will have the car in 1st gear at a stop light and barely 2 seconds after the car rolls foward, the little display show that the car slipped in 2nd gear and this is even when I do a mild acceleration and the RPM well into the safe zone. Its not a big issue for me but just curious if this was normal. The car seem to perform well and don't notice any unusual transmission operation...

^^

That's just how they have the gear selection/throttle postion mapped.

The point is, the car decides when to shift from 1st to 2nd.

In the SS mode, this has been the case for all TL's in the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen up to the '07 Type-S. The 3G TL-S holds first until the driver selects second. Not sure which "method" the '07/'08 base model uses.

What I'm getting at is that what you're seeing is, historically, the most "normal" mode of operation for the SS in the TL.

push the pedal harder and it will shift at 5k rpm or so, on mild acceleration it will shift early, I noticed that too

MISU...Thanks for confirming my 2012 TL isn't the only one doing this....I wasn't sure if someonething was wrong with mine but I see that maybe its how the 2012 are.

WHITE_SH....Thanks for answering but I am just wondering if they modified things when they introduced the 6-Speed tranny. My TSX was like that too (5 speed as well).

Combat MediC....I think you misread my posts. I do understand that its normal that the car will shift on its own if you push it close to a point where damage will occur....In my situation, its not what happens. I am at a full stop, in SS mode, then I press the pedal gently and the display shows the 2nd gear almost instantly even when I am going slow and RPM well below the danger zone. My TSX never did this at low speed. The 2nd, 3rd 4th etc are all behaving as I would expect.....its the 1st going to 2nd that shift automatically. MISU confirmed that his does the same so I am re-assured now

My guess is that the 'double clutch' in the new 6 speed transmission is causing to do that.

Yes, this was changed for the '12 TL and with the new 6-speed auto; the '09-'11 TLs do not do this.

It can be annoiing when you turning a corner in sport mode. When turning the wheel you can lose the paddles, and then you are in 5 or 6k before you can bump it to 2nd. I can see how the mentioned new transmission behavior could make life easier.

Not sure how the manual mode works on the TL. But for the 2010 TSX,I can get my car to hold 1st. I've boucned the tach a few times without stepping hard on the accelerator.
But what I have to do is the following (usually from standstill):
shift down to S for "sport mode"
then click either paddle so that my dash displays the gear and an "M" beside the gear number.
Only way to go into full "manual" mode.

But from what I've read above, I guess doing that won't help. Guess the 6 gearbox is changed a bit.

Not exactly dual clutch.

"The transmission teams with a new multi-clutch torque converter "

This certainly isn't something new being as my 2001 CL-S also did this. When in manual mode, it would automatically shift first to second or second to first at fairly low RPM. I think, if nothing else, that transition into and out of first gear can be a bit rough/harsh/abrupt if the driver doesn't do it at the right time, so the transmission is shifting it to try and avoid some significant shift-shock and/or damage to the transmission. It always seemed normal to me and I've been thankful I didn't have to worry about that last shift when slowing down to a stoplight or something.
