LATCH restraint system question

Just been blessed with a little baby boy!
Got a question though.
Has anyone ever put a child seat in the middle of the rear seat using the LATCH restraints?
I'm getting conflicting info on whether or not you are supposed to do that with the 4G TL.

The center position should generally not be used as the available LATCH attachment points point away from each other when they should point towards each other. The easiest and best thing to do is to is to take the seat and your car to an inspection station where they will show you how to install it correctly for free.

A few things to consider

NHTSA Child Safety

Inspection Stations by ZIP Code

Yes, I have, but it puts the child seat pretty high. I decided to move it the the passenger side instead. Please remember, that if you live in a place where you parallel park, the child seat should be on the passenger side, so you are not in traffic when putting the child in, or taking the child out of the car.

According to the above link, the safest place is the center.
I had a 05 TL when I child was an infant and we really didn't have any problems installing the car seat in the middle.

I meant to say that the passenger side is better than the driver side... not the middle. Sorry for any confusion.

There is quite a bit of debate over this but given the structural integrity of modern cars, the passenger side is really the best place.
  • Most LATCH systems don't have a center position
  • The seats are generally oddly shaped in the center and car seats don't fit there well
  • Car seats in the middle often interfere with the positioning of both the front seats. If the car seat is in one of the outboard positions it usually does not interfere with the position of the front seat.
  • Flying objects are more likely to strike the child in the center position
  • You can't glance over at the child at a stoplight
  • There is no safety advantage in a modern car.

Just put it behind a seat its easier to access the kid if it's diagnol from you rather than center. And it's more than enough room for it to fit comfortably behind a seat.

I've put it in the rear passenger side. At some point, I may go by the local fire department and have one of them check the middle out.
Thanks to everyone for the links and advice.

Congrats on your new baby. You may want to look at one of these if you haven't already. It's an Acura oem accessory.

I'm pretty sure if you read your owners manual it'll tell you to NOT put a carseat in the middle in the TL, regardless of using LATCH or the belt (but that may only be on the AWD models).

I have two recaros in my TL, kids like riding in my car better then Mom's outback
