How low have you gone?

I probably could have gone lower, but I didn't want to risk it...

after you reach 0, you have reserve.
just fyi.
its an 18.5 gallon tank, I'm betting you only put in about 15 gallons each time correct?
that leaves you with about 3 gallons in reserve.
One should never completely run the tank dry, as the fuel pump might malfunction

I don't think my range was under 20 mile but I remember putting in 17.5 gallons when I finally stopped at the gas station for my lowest.

^oh wow, then disregard my above comment.
if the tank is 18.5 gal. and you're putting in 17gals, that doesnt leave room for a reserve

Yeah, I consistently put around 17 gallons in... I forget what I filled it up w/ that day - I'll go look at my receipt later

Shelly, yer scaring me . I hope that's not a normal occurance! Sheesh, I get nervous if I let it get down to 1/4 tank!

I have an aunt that used to run out of gas all the time.. her gauge worked but she "forgot" to check it.

No, no, I drive way too much to ever get it that low again - I was testing it's limits And sweatin' bullets the whole time! haha

I probably have the "E" light come on maybe once or twice a month. I typically fill up just as it's touching that last white line - usually about $55-$60 worth of premium

Isn't there "stuff" that accumulates in the bottom of the tank that could foul up your engine if it gets too low? I had an old-timer tell me that a few years ago (I consistently drove the Accord around on E), and it's stuck w/ me... but I only use Shell gas, soooo do I have to worry? Plus, premium gas shouldn't have "stuff" in it to mess up my engine if the fuel gets too low, right??

I've been at 1 mile before. I do that so I could dump some fuel system cleaner from time to time

There could be some stuf fon the bottom but not much cuz the liquid is "sloshed" around enough to keep it stirred up. The pickup tube in the tank os near the bottom as well. The pickup has a screen on it and there is a filter inline, before the fuel pump (usually).

I woulld not let the worry of trash bother you.. having to walk to get gas = bad

^ I agree. If this is done consistently over time, the filters could get clogged somewhat and cause fuel efficiency to drop... I therefore put in gasoline before or as soon as the low gas indicator comes on.

I used to test the fuel range on my RDX and found that once you hit 0 miles there is a reserve of 1 - 1 1/2 gallons.

I've gotten under 10 miles on my TL and found the reserve to be about the same as the RDX.

What about fuel cleaners/etc. - used one once in the Accord, before I drove to my family's vacation house out in Western MD - lots of hills ("mountains") and whatnot, my dad suggested I pour that stuff in before I fueled up.

Any benefits??

I am not sure about how effective those cleaners are. We have a couple of stations here where you can choose to add a cleaner when you fill up but I am thinking it's more of a gimmick than anything... cuz they love to say that your injectors are "probably clogged" and that you "could" cause damage. IMO, I think it's more snake oil than anything. If you have a rough idle, then yeah.. could help but a full service injector cleaning would be better.

I wont argue whether fuel cleaners work or not. I use it every once 3-4 months not every time I fill up. I get better mileage and throttle response after a bottle of Techron. Just don't use cheap ones. I use Techron or Lucas

50-60 miles past 0 once when driving through BFE West Virgina. Not a decent gas station in site. The once I did pass only had 87. Filled up as soon as I hit PA state line.

What is wrong with all of you???

Besides the issues running the car low on gas creates, i.e.

-hot fuel pump.
-chance of running out in critical driving situation.
-having to call your wife, AAA, partner, and explain why you are so cheap that they have to bring you a gas can at 6PM on a Tuesday 1/2 mile away from a station.

The time it takes to deal with your little adventure will actually cost you money. I fill up anywhere between 1/2 and 1/4 tank. Never need to fret about whether I will make it and always have enough gas for emergencies.

I only fill up at specific gas stations / brands of gas. Furthermore... when you have emergency calls, shit (life) happens. Compound the issue that most gas stations arn't open at between the hours of 12am-5am and you tend to have issues some times when traveling hundreds of miles at night.

I agree with Mr. Marco 100% on this issue. I am not sure I see any benefit in waiting till the car is almost running on fumes to fill up. The potential damage you do is not worth it at all ... now if you are travelling in a foreign location and not sure where gas stations are and get caught, thats different but otherwise, I fill up well before I reach the bottom of the tank. Waiting till the tank is empty does not save money, and I would argue it would cost more money. I'd rather fill up when its 3/4 down a and pay 50$ than waiting to its empty and paying 80+$ (Canadian price here...we are at 1.25c/litre so X 4 litre in a gallon = 5$ a gallon (approx)

I have hit zero plenty of times on both of the 4G's that I have had. Nothing wrong with it at all. Like someone else already stated, the tank is 18 Gallons and at zero miles i put in 16.5 to 17 gallons.

If you have that much junk in your tank then it won't matter if it's full or not.

Drove my SHO on low once. Parked on a slope opposite of the pump and then couldn't get it started after work. At your own risk.

BTW

How low have you gone? Junk in the tank? I'm just waiting for someone to take this thread in a more...

how's the weather in Indiana?

In Germany you get points and have to pay a juicy fee if you are running out of gas on the Autobahn, since you are putting other drivers in danger.

Just FYI!

Wow, look at that! Marco being the voice of reason....

By the way, I've been as low as 11 miles left myself.
