How did this happen? Got locked out of my car

I got locked out of my car this morning, while key is inside the car. This frozen New England frozen morning, I entered my call normally using key Fob by touching the door handle; started the car normally and turned ON front/rear Defrosting , left my backpack inside with key in car keys in. I came out of car to remove ice coating with scraper. However after 5 couple of mins when I tried to enter the car back in, all 4 doors were locked; while car is still running and my keys inside the car (in my backpack). This has never happened to me before and spooked me out. Fob battery level was not low, as there was no warning about it.
Fortunately I was still at home, so I tried to open car with another key Fob, but car doors would not open. Finally I was able to unlock the driver side door using physical key in Fob and got saved.
Has anyone else seen this behavior before? Any ideas?

did the car start beeping at you that you left the key inside? If not, it could have been buried so deep in your bookbag that the signal didn't reach the antennas near the doors.

Hi, No car alarm did not go off when I tried to open the door. My concern is that I did not lock the car when I came out to clean the ice, but car got locked by itself. I am still puzzled.

I think there is an option in your driver settings to enable or disable auto-lock. I believe it can auto-lock the doors when you have the key in the car for security. It sounds like you might want to disable this if you live in a cold climate.

Can you reproduce the problem? i.e. Start car, put key in backpack and close door. I would close door "locked' and 'unlocked' as 2 tests. I would put the spare key far away so that it doesn't affect the experiment.

I have done THIS test before (TECH with push button start): Put key in car, go to the door handle area and lock door. Close door and the door will auto-unlock.

There are options you set in the cluster to control auto locking and unlocking. can be controlled by turning on the car, shifting into drive, turning off the car, etc. We have no way of knowing how your personal settings are configured. Grab the manual and go through the settings to adjust it to what you like. There's all kinds of personal settings in there for lock behavior, dome light behavior, headlight behavior, instrument cluster settings, etc.

Now if ONLY there was a setting that would lock the car automatically after you turn it off and walk away from it!!!!
