Honda oil filter

Today at the dealership I saw a Honda oil filter disassembled on display. I couldn't help but compare it to Fram oil filters. It had cardboard end caps, pleat spacing was better than Fram but not by much to my observation. I took a pic but since I'm brand new I can't post pics yet. I do my own maintenance since I've been a gas/diesel engine mechanic for 10 years and have all the tools/equipment and an above average knowledge on engines. At first I was discombobulated on how a luxury brand could use such a crappy filter construction, especially on a vehicle that a lot of people drive it like a wanna be racecar driver. I know Honda knows what they're doing and makes quality products, but for me their oil filter is substandard compared to others on the market for close to the same price. I've just seen way too many paper end cap filters collapse that causes filtration/flow to be severly impaired. Some have told me it doesn't matter what kind of filter you use as long as you change your oil at the right interval...thats just dumb. Just thought I'd give my two cents on the subject for all the people that take their vehicles in to the dealership for routine oil changes. I personally use Wix, but there's a lot of great filters out there. Noone knows really how well their oil/filter performs unless they send a used oil sample off for analysis and take apart the used filter. Try it out.

Thamac15....Great, something else for me to worry about now! Seriously, I know nothing about oil filters so I wouldn't even know what to look for. I want to believe that Honda/Acura knows what is best for the car and given their engine durability, I think they have proven (to me anyway) that use reliable components. I appreciate your view and IF I could do my own oil change, maybe I'd be more inclined to worry about it more but with my complimentary 25 months of services, one more reason to care even less *lol*

I would be careful with Royal Purple, it seems a lot of people had excessive bearing wear on many forums. Of course this is all speculation, but better safe than sorry.

For now I will be using the A01 filter with Full Synthetic Honda oil, as it's only 6.xx a quart.

Would you direct me to some links? From RP's website, they state using it reduces engine wear, including ring, cylinder and bearing wear...

I bought my first oil filter for my 08 TL from Acura dealership. Paid 7 bucks for it, just to find out that it was made by Honeywell, FRAM's parent company. I might be wrong but the Acura/Honda Genuine oil filter is nothing but a basic FRAM oil filter. I started buying K&N from Amazon and am sticking to that brand.
I think K&N, Mobil 1 and Royal Purple, all of the three filters are made by the same company. They are just painted different.

IMO,

Oil filters are made to do what they are supposed to do, filter your oil from harmful deposits. I have yet to hear of anyone ruining their engine by buying the wrong filter. Some people prefer to buy more expensive ones for "peace of mind". If you change your oil as often as you should, then buy the best priced ones adn you will be just fine. I let Acura change my oil and they use Honda filters most of the time.

Not all filters perform their duty as required. Some fail while others do a far superior job. Think of your liver for a minute,...its job is to "filter" out the impurties in your blood to keep your heart/body running up to par. If you needed a new liver would you want one that is cheaply made and does not do its job great or would you want one that's just a few bucks more that performs excellent? i think that way with my car. Now some of you may be rich, but I am certainly not. I'm just lucky i always paid my bills and never acquired much debt so i was able to save from a few of my deployments overseas to have a down payment and to qualify for a .9% rate. I plan on having this car until it is unable to go on. i want the best quality fluids/filters in her. Even on leases i've had in the past i still put quality products in my cars/trucks so i would feel good for the next buyer knowing they are getting a well taken care of machine. Just a piece of mind thing i suppose. But here's a video of some filters taken apart....you decide what you want in your engine. I live in az by the way,...no way will i put inferior products in my engine when it's 115 degrees 5 months out of the year. Wix and mobil 1 are the only filters i use.

I ask for proof of a failure of a cheap ole run of the mill (Fram, Purolator..etc) filter, please. I do not think that a filter would stay on the market if it did not perform the single most important function of the filter.

I agree that some manufacturers use different products in their cans and can be far more expensive. I think it's like motor oil, everyone has their preferences. Some people would never trust a dealerships mechanic to change their oil.. everyone is anal about something

My point being, if Acura finds the Honda filter to be sufficient, it's good enough for me. YMMV
