High Mileage 2012 SH-AWD w/Advance?

I had to give up my beloved 05 TL a couple of years ago when we had baby #2. Ever since, I’ve been hoping to get back in the saddle and things may be coming together for that to happen soon. Anyway, so my budget is about 18K OTD. Bonus check arrives on Friday, and it’s already burning a hole…

I am hoping for some feedback, or things to look out for, when deciding whether or not to make this purchase.

I've found a 2012 TL SH-AWD w/Advance, one owner, no accidents, at a small local dealer. Listed at $17,150. I'm assuming I can talk 'em down a bit from that. It looks like it has been well maintained (all service records on carfax). HOWEVER…it does have a little over 120K miles(!) What do you think? Is that a reasonable price? If not, what is? Should I keep looking?

Is it a worth it to have a full CPO-style inspection done at the Acura dealer?

Lots of questions, I know. Feel free to answer any/all/none of them. Thanks in advance!

Personally I'd keep looking. In December I bought a 2009 SH-AWD for 17k OTD with 79,000mi. Well maintained, one owner, every upgrade available. Clear Bra, 2nd set of mats etc.

I just recently purchased a 12 SH AWD w/Advance with 70k miles. Some of the main things to consider, besides issues due to high mileage, would be the problems with oil consumption, the torque converter problem/software update, and the propellor shaft. The first can be remedied by keeping an eye on oil level assuming the consumption, if any, isn't extreme. Several threads are dedicated to the torque converter issue and what to look for on a lengthy test drive. Same is true with the whining of the propellor shaft.

If the car was local try giving the VIN to the local Acura dealer and they might be able to tell you if any of the above issues have been already addressed with the vehicle.

In addition the Timing belt service should have been done around 100k. If not this will run you anywhere between $800-$1600 depending on the exact services performed. This definitely needs to be completed if not already. Could help with working the price down.

Luckily for me the propellor shaft and torque converter issue had already been dealt with by the previous owner of my TL. I did not pay to have the inspection but did decide to have all fluids in the car replaced and asked that if they noticed any issues with the car to let me know. I think they wanted around $160 to do the inspection. As to the oil consumption issue I haven't been able to put enough miles on it yet to see if this car is affected. It will remain parked in the garage until the replacement air bag parts become available. This recall (Takata air bag recall) might also be helpful in negotiating price?

Hope this helps, good luck! Btw 2 car seats fit just fine in the back of the 2012 TL

I purchased a 2010 TL SH-AWD w/ 112k miles in November and a 2012 TL Base w/ 140k Miles in October. Both cars are running fine, put on 5k miles on both. Get the timing belt done, my dealer is offering timing belt change w/ water pump inspection for $350ish which I'm going to have to do on both cars.

The 2010 TL SH-AWD was $13k and the 2012 TL one owner, dealer maintained, was $10.8k

Also,

Check if the TL is part of the airbag recall. That will help you negotiate.

The seller is saying that the timing belt service has already been done, not sure how to verify this, but like you said maybe if I get an inspection at an Acura dealer they can look it up.

I will do some more searching on the other issues you mentioned (torque converter and propeller shaft). The Acura dealer quoted me $220 for the 'full' inspection (the same one they would use to bring it up to 'certified' status if they were selling it) or $140 for the 'basic' inspection.

Thanks!

2010 with low miles

I bought a 2010 TL with 32 thousand miles with a rebuilt title like 2 years ago with a light hit. I mean it has no problems since I got it but now it's time to give her put my family growing. I'm asking 17k neg and its white with black leather . This is a rare find . I personally would not buy a TL over 60k miles unless they did a timing belt kit and tune up to it .

Sorry, everyone is entitled to their opinion and maybe I just misunderstood what you wrote but this makes no sense to me. A TL at 60K, 70K, 80K etc if well maintained will run a very long time past 100K.

The TL doesn't require a timing belt service until 100K, so why should the OP not consider a 65K or 70K mile TL if the timing belt hasn't been changed? I don't know of many people that change the belt 30K miles ahead of schedule unless the car is 8 or 9 years old, which isn't the case with the OP.

If the TL the OP is looking at with 120K hasn't had the belt replaced yet, I would negotiate the timing belt service in the price because that should be changed ASAP.

Personally I'd never pay that kind of money for a car with over 120,000 miles on it. I'd either look at a slightly older model with lower miles, or look at another brand altogether that would get me a newer model with less miles within my budget.

My 09 SH-AWD is almost at 150k miles

Just make sure the car you're looking at has been properly maintained and like another user mentioned, negotiate the cost of the timing belt and water pump along with any other minor issues you might find after a thorough inspection

Good luck!

OP if you think it's a good deal and you already know your numbers then look for the best deal within that range. Everyone is different. I am keeping an eye on the Air Bag recall because I was ready to pull the trigger on a SH13AdvanceTL, but my preference is 30k-45k miles. I would also urge you to check nationally if you can. I never limit myself to a local search. I've found my best deals searching nationally. Also keep in mind that timing belt service is not just at the 105k mile point, it is also based on time of 6-7 years. So a lightly 2010-2011 with 60k miles would still be approaching 105k service even though miles are low.
