Have a 2012 MDX as a rental

Well I brought my TL in for minor collision repairs to the rear bumper and I was offered either a Camry or an MDX. What a choice and obviously I chose the MDX.

Anyway, before my TL I had 2 previous gen MDX's (04 and 06), and this 2nd gen is very nice but is way too big. It is a step up from my TL, but I know I will never get an MDX again. Likely an RDX next with the family all but gone. It has a great interior but the door panels did not match up to the dash. The steering wheel is too big. It is fun to drive however.

My better half and I weren't too impressed with the MDX, either. I've had it a few times now while my TL has been at the dealership getting whatever done, and it' just a little.... Lack luster for me personally. I always have another TL Advance for my loaners now.

I have that same combo. Haha

My wife drives the MDX and I have the TL. The MDX is a very comfortable ride and this is our family car. My only complaint about it is the MPG. This thing is horrible.

A funny story. While driving down the street, a homeless guy walking on the sidewalk yells at me "what a waste of gas!". And I said "tell me about it". Haha

i tried my hardest to convince my wife to get the MDX, but after test driving it we decided to go with the pilot for a few reasons:

1- atrocious gas mileage. really bad. and being in florida we dont need AWD, so it was nice to have the option with the pilot of getting awd or fwd. the pilot has VCM and i can get 23-24 on the highway and 20 in the city

2- no push button start; and to be honest the tech seemed stale. i know they're updating it next year however. at this price range i would expect push button start

3- cost. we wanted nav and rear seat entertainment. would be close to $50K for the MDX, and only $37 for the pilot

4- biggest factor however was the interior room. we have a growing family and will need the third row periodically. the MDX third row is tiny. the luggage space with the third row up is tiny. pilot is much more comfortable inside.

Tech filters down. Can you even find a car with window cranks? Electric windows used to be the purvue of high-end cars. At this point every car manufacturered should have push button start, HIDs, some type of VSA, ABS, power seats, bluetooth, at least 6 speed auto, etc.

I got a 2010 MDX a couple of years ago as a loaner when my 2008 TL was in for some warranty work. I liked it because it did not feel like an SUV. It was very civilized and planted, for a truck. Though it was not as nimble as my TL, I think it was an enjoyable vehicle.

With a 4600lbs curb weight, there's no way around the hefty fuel consumption, unless Acura decides to implement the cylinder deactivation function.

My wife and I felt the same way! We just leased a 2012 Pilot EX-L w/ Navi. Our daughter is only a month old so we opted against the RES since we'll probably turn it in at the end of the lease anyway. I'm very impressed with it so far!

It really does eat up the gas. But it really has great pick up and go off the line. I think it is because of the 6 speed auto.
It's weird, if we are are the red light, it turns green, without even trying we will find our selves way out in front of the rest of the pack.

I drove a friends Pilot and didn't find the handling to be even close. The Pilot wallows and dips on the corners, and the MDX drives flat like a neutral car.

hmmm...i have a 3G TL and the MDX. best of both worlds. cargo and comfort of the X and the fun of a low riding sports sedan the MDX behaves like a sedan when handling, but acceleration and "zip" are less than desired. like most AT, there is a delay in responsiveness that my 6MT TL has...two different animals.

and yes...the MDX has a big ass and gets very thristy around town.

I have the same two as you and love both also. The MDX is amazing. It's the perfect size for our 3 kids and is super fun to drive.

You are so right. I was shocked to see the MDX does not have a push button start and doors that unlock by touching the door handle if you have the remote in your pocket. My TL which is about $12,000 Canadian less has it. Go figure. I like the lane warning feature or whatever you call it.

You are also right about the gas mileage. It is absolutely horrible.

the gas mileage of the MDX on the hwy is NOT that bad. if you actually take road trips with the MDX....i've gotten 23-24MPG (EPA is 20mpg) driving 75mph most of the way, hauling two bikes on a hitch rack and gear in the cargo hold. around town...mixed driving...16-17mpg. the MDX as a travel companion does great, around town...she gets thirsty. what do you want ?? it takes a lot just to move her 4500 lb big butt from a stop to get her going.

Speaking of the MDX, I saw the camo pics for the redesigned MDX and it appears the dual exhaust is also gone on the upcoming model. Someone at my dealership told me this is the way Acura is taking ALL its vehicles. I am on board with the SUVs but a TL without the dual exhausts will be a sad day if it does happen.

Speaking of fuel mileage...I just came back from an 400km (~250 miles) trip (one way) and I averaged 8.1l/100km (or 29mpg) but this is on the MID and not hand calculated. This is pretty good given a car this size and AWD

Heh.. I had an MDX loaner and got high teens on average. 23 mpg on the highway. Not bad considering its capacity and power.

Single exhaust ..... that's even better. Now the aftermarket exhaust systems will become a whole lot cheaper and more affordable with the single exhaust setup.

Interesting thing. Two of my daughters bought Pilots instead of the MDX. When I put factory running boards on one over half the parts bags said Acura on them. I think the 4X4 Pilot is a good SUV at a good price point.

I am thinking it will be more like the 2013 RDX where the exhaust tips are no where to be seen....
